Warriors pull away from the Blue Jays in second half for 88-71 win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Junior Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) led four Lycoming College men’s basketball players in double figures with 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Warriors pulled away in the second half to take an 88-71 Commonwealth Conference decision on the road at Elizabethtown College on Wednesday night, Dec. 5, at Thompson Gymnasium.
 
The Blue Jays (1-6 overall, 0-4 Commonwealth) took an early lead in the second half, as Ben Cable hit a 3-pointer with the first shot of the half to give the Blue Jays a 39-38 lead. After two Lycoming free throws and one Elizabethtown free throw, the Warriors (6-1 overall, 3-0 Commonwealth) got back-to-back layups from Anthony and sophomore Chris Foreman (Union, N.J./Union) and a 3-pointer from junior Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) gave Lycoming a 47-40 lead.
 
The Blue Jays cut the lead back down to two points with a 12-7 run that made it 54-52 with 14:23 left. Foreman stopped the run with a 3-pointer with 14:12 left. A 1:30 scoreless lapse was followed by a layup by Lee Eckert made it 57-54, but the Warriors started to dominate from there, starting a 27-10 run, with Anthony capping it with a pair of free throws with 4:43 left to make it 81-64. From there, the Warriors were able to hold on, not allowing the Blue Jays back within 17 points and getting a chance to get deep into its bench in the final minutes, as 15 players played in the game.
 
Elizabethtown got out to a hot start, taking a 12-4 lead with 13:47 left before senior Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) hit a 3-pointer to get the Warriors offense started. Just 3:47 later, a Williams steal led to a layup to tie the game at 14.
 
The Blue Jays got the lead back to five points at 22-17 with 8:24 left before the Warriors kicked their high-tempo offense into gear, taking its first lead of the game when freshman William Wingate (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastery Charter) found Foreman for a layup in the midst of a 21-9 run that gave Lycoming a 38-31 lead with 1:35 left on a layup by Wingate.
 
Elizabethtown closed the half with five straight points to cut the Warriors lead to 38-36 at halftime.
 
Anthony hit 6-of-11 from the field and he pulled in double-digit rebounds to mark his third double-double of the season. Rudy added 14 points, three 3-pointers and three steals. Foreman posted 12 points, five rebounds and two 3-pointers and sophomore Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) added 10 points and two 3-pointers.
 
Williams had another solid game as the team’s motor, posting seven points, seven steals, eight assists and five rebounds. Senior Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King) added nine points, seven rebounds and three blocks and Wingate added seven points and two steals.
 
Cable finished with 14 points to lead the Blue Jays. Lee Eckert added 12 points and seven rebounds and Joe Schwalm added 12 points and six rebounds. Joe Renzi posted eight assists and four steals.
 
The Warriors head home to face Arcadia in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader on Saturday, Dec. 8, at Lamade Gym. The women tip at 1 p.m. before the men play at 3 p.m.
