Jerald Williams wins Basinger Tournament MVP
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensberg) notched 19 points and 14 assists to wrap up his third straight Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament Most Valuable Player award and junior Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) tied a school-record with six blocked shots to lead the Warriors to a 100-72 win in the tournament’s championship game against John Jay on Sunday, Dec. 30.

Williams, who averaged 9.5 points, 14 assists and 3.5 steals to lead the Warriors (11-1 overall) to their third straight Basinger Tournament title, posted a game-high 19 points to go with 14 assists and four steals. Along the way, he helped the Warriors post back-to-back 100-point games for the first time since the 1995-96 team did it five times in a row from Nov. 21-Dec. 8 and helped the Warriors extend their winning streak to 10 games, the third-longest in school history.

Rudy swatted away six shot to give him nine in the tournament and added 12 points and eight rebounds to earn All-Tournament honors. He tied the school record of six blocks, which has been achieved four times, joining former teammate Mike Bradley ’12 in the club, as Bradley posted six blocks against Elizabethtown in 2012.

The Warriors and Bloodhounds (6-3 overall) played quickly throughout, with the teams combining for 139 shots and 34 turnovers. Lycoming scored 33 points off the fastbreak and managed to hold John Jay to just 16.

The Warriors began to break the game open after the first four minutes, with freshman William Wingate (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastery Charter) poked the ball away from a Bloodhound and found Williams, who streaked in for the fastbreak layup. After a pair of shots failed to fall for the Bloodhounds, senior Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) found Rudy in transition for a 3-pointer. From there, the Warriors were off on an 18-4 run that helped the Warriors take a 29-13 lead with 9:03 left in the half.

The Bloodhounds closed within seven with 5:35 left in the half, but the Warriors responded with eight straight points in the next 90 seconds. John Jay got the Lycoming lead down to 10 points with a 3-pointer from Kris Owens before the half. In the second half, John Jay closed within seven once more on a 3-point play to start the half, but Lycoming used a 26-7 run over the next eight minutes to break open the game.

The Warriors got the lead to as many as 32 points in the later stages of the game, but never let John Jay within 20 in the game’s final 14 minutes.

Sophomore Chris Foreman (Union, N.J./Union) posted 17 points, four rebounds and three assists and Davis finished with nine points and seven rebounds, leaving him four points shy of becoming the 29th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points. Senior Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King) notched eight points and Wingate added seven points, a career-high 12 rebounds and three assists. Freshman Eric Ishman (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) added seven points and junior Justin Miller (Agawam, Mass./Bridgton Academy) posted three blocks.

Jamar Harry earned All-Tournament honors for John Jay after posting 18 points and four rebounds. Gary Brady added 15 points and Swindon Charles posted a team-high five rebounds.

In the tournament’s consolation game, Gallaudet defeated Cairn, 68-56 behind a 29-point, nine-rebound performance from All-Tournament selection Layton Seeber. Cairn’s Barron Lacy also earned All-Tournament honors, as he finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks against the Bison.
