WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – For the second straight game, junior
Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) put up another 20-point double-double effort to lead the Lycoming College women’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon, but the Warriors succumbed to a late rally by Eastern, falling 74-64, in the consolation game of the Hoops for Hounds Tournament at Lamade Gym on Saturday, Dec. 29.
In the championship game of the tournament, MCLA defeated Susquehanna, 69-58, behind 23 points from tournament MVP Lucy Tremblay.
Antonelli racked up 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Warriors (2-8 overall), posting a solid 9-for-13 effort from the floor and also adding two steals. The junior forward earned All-Tournament honors after averaging 23.5 points and 12.5 rebounds during the two-game affair.
Eastern (5-7 overall) was led by a trio of players in double figures, as Gina DiDomenico led the team with 20 points and six rebounds, All-Tournament selection Meghan Nowak added 18 points and eight rebounds and Kelsie Patton posted 18 points, hitting 13-of-16 from the line, and seven assists.
Lycoming got eight points each from sophomore
Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) and freshman
Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York). Ziminski posted six rebounds, two assists and two blocks and Manges added five rebounds. Freshman
Shannon Wheeler (Cranford, N.J./Linden) notched seven points and three assists and both freshman
Shanley Harlacker (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) and senior
Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) each had six points.
The two teams fought through six ties and four lead changes in the first half before Lycoming took control in the last three minutes, with Wheeler canning a fastbreak 3-pointer and Antonelli hitting a layup to give the Warriors a 33-28 lead at the break.
The teams fought through two more ties and a lead change in the opening minutes of the second half before the Warriors scored six points in a row, all from Antonelli to take a 44-38 lead with 15:21 left, but the Eagles responded with eight straight points. Lycoming got the lead back to four at 50-46 before Eastern fought back and caused one more lead change and five more ties.
Finally, with the score tied at 54 with 5:16 left, Nowak broke the tie with a pair of free throws and a layup to take a 58-54 lead with 3:23 left. The Warriors couldn’t get closer than three the rest of the way.
The Warriors get back on the court on Thursday, Jan. 3, when they head to King’s (Pa.) for a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
