Warriors fall to Blazers

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Despite hitting two more field goals than its opponent, the Lycoming College women’s basketball team was hurt by 31 fouls, helping Hood College make up the margin in a 57-50 Commonwealth Conference win on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 1 at Lamade Gym.
 
The Warriors (0-5 overall, 0-2 Commonwealth) were led by 13 points from sophomore Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) and 11 rebounds each from junior Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) and sophomore Kat Andriani (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata). Andriani added three blocks and Antonelli had two assists and a steal.
 
In a defensive battle that featured nine ties and nine lead changes, the Warriors built a six-point lead midway through the second half thanks to a 12-3 run in the second five minutes of the half, with freshman Shannon Wheeler (Cranford, N.J./Linden) starting the run with four straight points and a jumper by sophomore Ali Derr (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) hitting a jumper to give the Warriors a 38-32 lead with 10:44 left.
 
After exchanging threes over the next two minutes, the Blazers (3-2 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth) worked back into the game with seven straight points, taking the lead on a layup by Dyana Prater with 5:40 left.
 
After a jumper by sophomore Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda Area), the Blazers continues to roll, using seven free throws and a 3-pointer by Prater to take a 53-45 lead with 48 seconds remaining and the Warriors couldn’t get closer than six points in the remainder of the game.
 
The Warriors took a 15-8 lead with a seven-point run over a two-minute span midway through the first half, but a pair of Hood 3-pointers helped them get back into the game, eventually taking a 19-18 lead with 3:50 left in the half on a layup by Rachael Kessler. Lycoming took the lead back late in the half, though, on two layups by freshman Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) on her first two collegiate touches.
 
In the second half, the teams fought through two ties before the Warriors’ run gave them a six-point lead with 10:44 left.
 
Henderson and Wheeler each posted six points, with Wheeler adding two assists and two steals. Senior Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) posted two points, five assists and three steals.
 
Hood was led by 19 points and 10 rebounds from Prater and 13 points and six rebounds from Kessler. Emily Maerz posted eight points, seven rebounds and four steals and Rachel Wiley posted four points, nine rebounds, two blocks and four steals.
   
The Warriors get back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 5, when they head to Elizabethtown College in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader. The women tip at 6 p.m. and the men tip at 8 p.m.
