Diplomats pull away from Warriors in opener

LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) notched 15 points and added a career-high tying six steals to lead the Lycoming College women’s basketball team, but Franklin & Marshall had four players in double figures to help it to a 73-52 win in the opening round of the Terry Greene Memorial Classic at the Mayser Center on Saturday, Nov. 17.
 
The Warriors (0-1 overall)  kept the game close for most of the first half, with a 3-pointer from freshman Shannon Wheeler (Cranford, N.J./Linden) tying the game at 13 with 9:07 left. The Diplomats (1-0 overall) used a 13-4 run, though, over the next 4:30 to take a 26-17 lead with 4:32 left in the half. The Warriors scored six straight points late in the half, with a fastbreak layup from Wheeler making it 29-26 with 51 seconds left before the Diplomats closed the half with three points.
 
In the second half, the Warriors continued to keep the game close, with a layup by junior Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) making it 40-38 with 14:35 left. However the Diplomats controlled the rest of the game, scoring the next 11 points and never letting the lead fall back into single digits.
 
Wheeler and fellow freshman Shanley Harlacker (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) each posted seven points and freshman Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) added five. Junior Kat Andriani (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) posted eight rebounds and Antonelli posted seven.
 
Alexa Barbush posted 17 points for the Diplomats and both Sam Plunkett and Hannah Rose Nussbau each added 12. Kristina McCarthy posted 10 points, 19 rebounds and four blocks and Elizabeth Snyder notched four steals and 10 rebounds.
 
The Warriors wrap up their time at the Terry Greene Memorial Classic when they face Moravian at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Mayser Center.
