Hot-hitting Warriors sweep Crusaders

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Hitting .344 as a team, the Lycoming College volleyball team soared to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-16) sweep of Commonwealth Conference foe Alvernia to even its conference record on Wednesday night, Oct. 3, at Lamade Gym.
 
Freshman Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York Area) posted 12 kills and hit .500 to lead the Warriors (14-4 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth). Richardson also posted seven digs and two aces. Senior Jackie Oliva (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area) added nine kills, hitting .533, and added five blocks.
 
Junior Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) added seven digs and sophomore Amber Seibel (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) notched six kills, six digs and two blocks. Junior Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 35 assists, three kills, two aces and seven digs. Sophomore Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon) led the team with a match-high 13 digs.
 
With the score 8-7 in the first set, the Warriors went on a 11-4 run led by five straight service points from Whitehead to take control en route to the 25-16 win. In the second set, Alvernia (8-9 overall, 2-3 Commonwealth) stuck close, coming within two points at 14-12 before Lycoming went on an 11-6 run to finish off the set, with Seibel posting an ace and Richardson finding the floor to wrap up the set.
 
In the third set, Lycoming used four straight points off Seibel’s serve to take control, never letting Alvernia back within three points. Oliva posted three blocks in the set and Richardson also posted a solo rejection to pace the Warriors to the 25-16 win.
 
Brittanie Wolfe led the Crusaders with 10 kills and six digs and Tori Beck notched 17 assists and five digs. Liz Newman notched five kills and two aces and Toni Maurer led the team with 10 digs.
 
The Warriors will now head to Lebanon Valley for the Middle Atlantic Conference Crossover, facing Delaware Valley at 11:30 a.m. and FDU-Florham at 1:30 p.m.
