Warriors split during first day at Seahawk Invitational

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – By winning the fourth and fifth sets in the nightcap, the Lycoming College volleyball team was able to split its opening pair of matches at the Seahawk Invitational, falling 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-10) to host St. Mary’s (Md.) before downing Hollins, 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-9), at the O’Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena on Friday evening, Oct. 26.
 
A kill and a block by sophomore Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda Area) during a three-point run after a tie at seven helped put the Warriors (21-10 overall) in control in the fifth set and three kills from senior Jackie Oliva (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area) helped the team close out the match with four straight points to lead the Warriors to the win over Hollins (6-21 overall).
 
Lycoming took control early in the first set, using a 7-2 run after Hollins drew within a point at 13-12 to take control. After Hollins got a pair of points, but the Warriors responded with four straight points as junior Chelsee Strine (South Boardman, Mich./Forest Area) and Sutton punctuated the run with kills, helping the Warriors take a 25-18 decision.
 
After a pair of narrow losses, 25-23 and 25-21, in the next two sets, the Warriors cracked open the fourth set after it was tied at 13 when two kills by Richardson and two blocks by Oliva gave Lycoming an 18-13 lead. Lycoming never let Hollins within three after that, taking the 25-21 decision.
 
Oliva led the Warriors with 17 kills, hitting .424, and three blocks while Sutton posted 11 kills, seven digs and two blocks. Freshman Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) added 10 kills and 10 digs and sophomore Laura Cinicola (Tamaqua, Pa./Marian Catholic) added nine digs. Junior Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) posted 42 assists and 15 digs, as she crossed 1,000 assists for the second straight year during the match. Sophomore Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon) added 36 digs and Strine posted eight kills and seven digs.
 
Hollins was led by 19 kills and 26 digs from Ally Reed and 17 kills by Lauren Hays. Reed also posted eight aces and Lela Moore posted 31 assists and 11 digs.
 
In the first match, St. Mary’s (19-7 overall) staved off a pair of Warrior rallies to post a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-10) win to open Lycoming’s time at the tournament.
 
Oliva posted seven kills to lead the Warriors while Richardson and Sutton each posted six. McKillop posted 24 assists and seven digs and Whitehead added 22 digs. Both Richardson and Oliva notched three blocks.
 
Down 13-5 in the first set, the Warriors got into the set with a 18-9 run, as an ace by Whitehead brought the Warriors within a point at 24-23, but the Seahawks posted a kill to end the set. In the second set, the Seahawks took a 16-11 lead, but the Warriors fought back to tie it with five straight points on the serve of Cinicola, but with the score tied at 21, the Seahawks took control by scoring the set’s last four points. In the third set, the Seahawks broke open a 4-4 tie with 13 straight points en route to the 25-10 win.
 
The Seahawks were led by 11 kills and 16 digs from Jenn Rindone and Mandy Goodspeed added 10 kills. Dani Thorne posted 19 assists and nine digs and Grace Chao added 15 assists and six aces. Bianca Livioco also added 10 digs.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Oct. 27 with the final two matches of the regular season, facing Stevenson at 1 p.m. and Randolph at 3 p.m.
