Warriors clinch playoff berth with four-set win over Knights

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Three Lycoming College volleyball players finished with double-digit kills, led by 13 from senior Jackie Oliva (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area), as the Warriors clinched their second straight postseason berth with a 3-1 (25-12, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16) win over Arcadia in Commonwealth Conference action on Tuesday night, Oct. 23, at Lamade Gym.
 
Oliva, who was honored in a Senior Day ceremony before the match, became the 13th player in school history to reach 600 career kills with her third of 13 kills, as she hit .435. She also posted three blocks, helping the Warriors (20-9 overall, 5-4 Commonwealth) reach 20 wins for the first time since 2003.
 
The Warriors finished 5-4 in conference play and have clinched the berth, as they hold a tiebreaker over the sixth-place team, Lebanon Valley, after beating the Flying Dutchmen head-to-head, 3-1, on Oct. 17. Arcadia fell to 8-14 overall and 1-7 in the Commonwealth.
 
Both junior Chelsee Strine (South Boardman, Mich./Forest Area) and junior Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) each notched 10 kills. Strine added 10 digs for her first career double-double and Gear added three blocks.
 
Sophomore Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon) added a career-high five aces and a match-high 13 digs and freshman Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York Area) added eight kills, 12 digs and two aces. Sophomore Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda Area) added nine kills and six digs and junior Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) notched 39 assists, 10 digs and three blocks.
 
The Warriors jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first set, cruising to a 25-12 win, as Whitehead served for six straight points and Richardson served for five. In the second set, the Warriors went on a 12-3 run midway through the set to break open the set and take an 18-9 lead en route to a 25-17 win.
 
The Knights edged out the Warriors in the third set, posting a 25-23 win in a set that had 10 ties and four lead changes. Lycoming took control back in the fourth set, as Whitehead served up eight straight points to take a 10-2 lead and Lycoming cruised to the 25-16 win.
 
Kathryn Ahem led the Knights with 10 kills, four aces and eight digs and Christie Kershaw added seven kills. Carlee Rossiter posted 25 assists, five digs and four blocks. Erin Ficca added nine digs.
 
The Warriors get back on the court at the St. Mary’s (Md.) Tournament this weekend, starting by facing St. Mary’s on Friday, Oct. 26, at 5 p.m. before facing Hollins at 7 p.m.
