WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Sophomore
Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) tied his career high with 28 points and junior
Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) added 20, but the Lycoming College men’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a late 11-point deficit as it lost its first game of the year, 82-80, at King’s (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 7.
Down 74-63 with 4:06 left and down seven with 55 seconds left, the Warriors (12-1 overall) made it close thanks to not allowing a field goal in the last four minutes of the game, as Davis hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to four points before a Monarch free throw made it 79-74 with 41 seconds left. A layup from Anthony made it a three-point game and after a missed free throw, Anthony hit another layup with 12 seconds left to make it 79-78.
Kyle Hammonds hit a pair of free throws, though, with 11 seconds left and King’s (7-6 overall) fouled with four seconds left, allowing Davis to hit a pair to make it 81-80. After Kyle Stackhouse hit the back end of a pair of free throws with four seconds left, the Warriors last chance shot was off the mark.
The Monarchs took care of the basketball all game, allowing just 11 turnovers as the Warriors manufactured a season-low three steals, helping King’s keep the lead for much of the game.
King’s held the lead for much of the first half, as Lycoming held the lead at 11-10, but King’s used a 7-0 midway through the half to take a 25-16 lead. An 8-1 run capped by a pair of shots from Anthony brought Lycoming within two points at 26-24, but King’s scored the next five points and took a 38-31 lead into halftime.
King’s got the lead to nine points after a 3-pointer from Hammonds with 17:23 left in the second half, but Lycoming scored the next 10 points, with Anthony hitting a pair of buckets and both Davis and freshman
Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) connected on threes to give Lycoming a 44-43 lead. From there, neither team had more than a five-point lead until back-to-back threes from Mike Foster and Nick Reisig gave King’s a nine-point lead with 4:47 left, setting up the final moments.
Anthony, besides his 28 points, added seven rebounds and four blocks and Davis hit five treys en route to his 20 points, while he also added five rebounds and two assists. Dougher finished with 14 points and four 3-pointers and junior
