Second-half run falls short for Warriors at LVC

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. – A 21-9 run to open the second half helped the Lycoming College women’s basketball team put a scare into No. 17 Lebanon Valley on Saturday, Jan. 28, in Commonwealth Conference action at the LVC Gymnasium, but the Flying Dutchmen closed the game on a 17-8 run of their own to take a 58-44 decision from the Warriors.

Down by 17 at halftime, the Warriors (8-10 overall, 3-5 Commonwealth) came out firing in the second half after a bucket by the Dutchmen (17-2 overall, 8-0 Commonwealth) opened the period. Lycoming responded with a pair of threes from junior Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) starting a run of eight straight points. The Dutchmen got the lead back to 16 points, but a layup by Scheller with 12:12 left started an 11-0 run, bringing Lycoming within five points after a trey from freshman Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) with 8:26 remaining.

The Warriors couldn’t get any closer though, as 3-pointers from Eryn Schultz and Tierney Hiltz helped Lebanon Valley get the lead back to double figures with 3:39 left and Lycoming could not cut further into the deficit.

After the Warriors drew within two points at 7-5, the Dutchmen went on an 18-2 run to take a 25-7 lead and take control of the game with 5:30 left in the first half. The Dutchmen were able to get the lead to 20 points before a 3-pointer from Ziminski dropped in late in the half to cut the lead to 32-15 at the half.

Scheller led the Warriors with 11 points, four rebounds and five steals, as she became just the fourth person in school history to post 50 steals twice in a career with her third theft. Ziminski added 10 points, two 3-pointers, four rebounds and four steals.

Freshmen Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda Area) and Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) each notched six points and sophomore Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) posted four points and nine rebounds. Senior Erin Connaghan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) added four assists.

Hiltz led the Ditchmen with 19 points, five assists and nine rebounds and Caitlin Murphy added six points and 11 rebounds. Kiely Chaklos posted five assists.
