Blue Jays down Warriors, 69-66

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Four Lycoming College men’s basketball players finished in double figures and senior Mike Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) tied the school record for blocked shots in a game, but Elizabethtown was able use 18 second-chance points and a 15-point first half lead en route to a 69-66 win in Commonwealth Conference action at Lamade Gym on Wednesday night, Jan. 25.
 
Bradley notched 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals to go with his school-record-tying six blocked shots, as the Warriors, who are third in the nation in the category, rejected 12 shots in the contest.
 
Junior Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensberg) posted a season-high 13 points to go with nine assists, four rebounds and four steals to lead the Warriors (15-3 overall, 5-2 Commonwealth), who fell one game behind Messiah for first in the Commonwealth Conference with the loss.
 
Freshman Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) posted 12 points and three 3-pointers and sophomore Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) added 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
 
Both teams started out slow, with the Warriors taking a 9-8 lead with 13:45 left before the Blue Jays (7-10 overall, 3-4 Commonwealth) went on a 25-9 run over the next eight minutes to take a 33-18 lead with 5:30 left. The Warriors cut the deficit in half by halftime, with a pair of fastbreak buckets, one by Williams and a dunk by Rudy, helping the Warriors close out the half down 39-31.
 
In the second half, the Blue Jays got the lead to 12 points with 14:11 left at 50-38 after a 3-pointer from Ben Cable. Lycoming got the lead down to four points with 6:06 left after a jumper by junior Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King), but Elizabethtown used an 8-2 run to get the lead back to double figures with 4:31 left.
 
Lycoming whittled the lead down to three points with seven straight points, as Dougher hit his third transition 3-pointer of the game with 2:23 left, cutting the Blue Jay lead to 63-60. After each team traded two points, the Warriors cut the lead to one with 13 seconds left as Davis hit a jumper in the lane. However, that was as close as they could get, as the Blue Jays hit four free throws to ice the game in the closing seconds.
 
Joe Schwalm led the Blue Jays with 17 points and five rebounds and Lee Eckert added 16 points and five boards. Andrew Mantz added eight points and eight rebounds and Kyle McConnell posted eight points and six assists.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 28, when they face Lebanon Valley at 4 p.m. as part of a doubleheader. The women tip at 2 p.m.
