Kat Andriani (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) scored a career-high eight points and sophomore
Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) added a team-high 11 to lead the Lycoming College women’s basketball team, but Widener University had four finish in double figures en route to a 65-40 win in Commonwealth Conference action on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 21, at the Schwartz Athletic Center.
The Warriors (8-8 overall, 3-3 Commonwealth) shot 40 percent (15-of-38) from the field, but were hindered by turnovers and a tenacious Pride (11-6 overall, 4-2 Commonwealth) on the glass, which grabbed 18 offensive rebounds.
Widener broke open the game midway through the first-half as Jennifer Egee hit back-to-back 3-pointers for the Pride, helping them take a 21-12 lead. The Warriors cut the lead to seven before Widener responded and by scoring the last five points of the half, the Pride took a 31-17 lead at the half.
A 9-2 run to open the second half helped Widener take a 21-point lead with 15:47 left and the Warriors responded by cutting the lead to 15 just two minutes later after a layup by Andriani capped an 8-2 run. However, Lycoming could only get as close as 13 before the Pride closed the game with a 19-7 run over the last 10 minutes.
Andriani finished with eight points, three rebounds and two assists and Antonelli posted 11 points on 4-of-5 from the field, while also notching two rebounds and a steal. Freshman
Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) added eight points and two rebounds. Junior
Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) added four points, three assists and two steals.
Jennifer Egee led the Pride with 15 points and three 3-pounters and Kate Dellinger added 13 points and four rebounds. Joanna Persiano added 12 points and four assists and Vanessa Hejnas collected 10 points and seven rebounds. Lil Carney produced six points, eight rebounds and four steals.
The Warriors will wrap up the first half of the Commonwealth Conference schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 25, when it hosts Elizabethtown at 6 p.m. as part of a doubleheader. The men’s teams will play at 8 p.m.
