Warriors fall to Messiah in second-place showdown

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Even though the Lycoming College women’s basketball team shot a solid 40 percent, six percent better than its opponent, and grabbed nine more rebounds, it couldn’t overcome nine 3-pointers and 18 steals from Messiah College as it notched a 51-34 win in Commonwealth Conference action on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
                                  
The Warriors (8-7 overall, 3-2 Commonwealth) and Falcons (13-3 overall, 4-1 Commonwealth) each struggled through the first five minutes off the game before Taylor Miller hit a 3-pointer for Messiah, helping heat up the baskets. Lycoming stayed close, with a layup from sophomore Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) tying the game at nine with 12:07 left. Miller hit a pair of threes though, starting a 25-4 run to end the half.
 
The Falcons continued to build the lead in the second half, getting it to as many as 32 points at 45-13 before Lycoming started to close the gap, with the Warriors closing the game on a 16-3 run in its final 10 minutes.
 
Lycoming shot 60 percent (9-of-15) in the second half while holding Messiah to 24 percent (6-of-25) to help it to a 21-17 advantage in the half.
 
Senior Chelsea Shearer (East York, Pa./Dallastown) led the Warriors with 10 points, hitting two 3-pointers, and Antonelli notched five points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Ali Derr (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) added six points, five rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Sophomore Jess Knott (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) added a career-high tying four assists.
 
Miller led the Falcons with 17 points and Dori Gyori notched 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Katlyn Vanderhoff added seven points, three assists and eight steals.
 
The Warriors get back on the floor when they head to Widener on Saturday, Jan. 21, for an important conference showdown. Tip is set for 1 p.m. with the men’s game following at 3 p.m.
