WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – After winning by the largest margin in the history of the River Derby in 2010, the Lycoming College women’s soccer team will look to retain the cup on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m., at the Shangraw Athletic Complex, when the Warriors take on rival Susquehanna in the fifth annual trophy game.
The Warriors and Crusaders have played every year since 1994, but the River Derby was started in 2007 as a trophy game to compliment the men’s soccer version of the rivalry, the Battle of the Boot. In the first three meetings in the trophy game, the teams were never separated by more than one goal, with the 2007 and 2009 games both going into double overtime.
The Warriors posted a 4-0 win in 2010 as Kaitlin Horn ’11 tied a school record with all four goals in the contest, marking the largest margin in the series with the Crusaders since Susquehanna won the 2004 meeting between the teams, 5-0.
The Warriors have not beaten the Crusaders on the artificial turf of the Shangraw Athletic Complex, but, in three meetings, the two teams have fought to draws in 2006 and 2009. In all, four of the last six meetings between the squads have gone to overtime.
The Warriors (1-4 overall) retained the trophy in one of their two rivalry games when they notched a 3-0 win over Penn College in the Battle for the Lumber on Saturday, Sept. 17. Senior Jussae Hanford (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) notched two goals in the contest and senior Kelly Prendergast (Edison, N.J./Rutgers Prep) posted a goal and an assist to lead the Warriors to the win.
The Crusaders (3-2 overall) have won two of their last three games, downing Misericordia, 2-1, and Penn State-Altoona, 3-2, before falling at Lebanon Valley, 5-0, on Saturday, Sept. 17. The Crusaders are led by Marissa DeParto, who has four goals and eight points in five games and Laura Buriak, who has two goals and an assist.
