WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With four goals in the first six minutes, the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team built up a five-goal lead in the first half before holding on for their third straight victory, a 9-8 Middle Atlantic Conference win over Lebanon Valley on a rainy Wednesday, April 6, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
Sophomore Stephen Romano (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) led the Warriors (4-5 overall, 3-1 MAC) with four goals and two assists, as he became the 19th player in school history to post 50 career goals with his first goal. Senior Ethan Payne (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) added three goals and freshman Brett Farrell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) added two goals for the third straight game.
Payne got the team out to a hot start, scoring twice in the first 2:35, taking a pass from junior Ben Walker (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and firing a laser from 13 yards out and then taking another pass from Romano and denting the twine just over a minute later. Romano then found Farrell for a goal with 11:36 left in the first half and Romano added an unassisted goal with 9:03 left to give the Warriors a 4-0 lead.
The Flying Dutchmen (4-6 overall, 2-3 MAC) scored a goal to end the run, but Romano and Payne each connected on goals early in the second quarter to take a 6-1 lead. LVC scored three straight goals, with two from Malik Pedroso to cut the lead to two goals, but sophomore Tom Lurie (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) found Romano for his third strike with 4:30 left. A goal with less than two minutes left in the quarter helped the Dutchmen cut the lead to 7-5 at halftime.
Farrell scored his second goal less than a minute into the fourth quarter to take an 8-5 lead before the Dutchmen scored a pair of goals midway through the quarter to make it 8-7 after a goal from C.J. Adams.
The teams settled into a defensive battle for much of the final 22 minutes and the Warriors added a much-needed insurance goal on a ripped shot from Romano 45 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Dutchmen got a late goal from C.J. Adams, but the Warriors allowed just one shot after that and freshman Andrew Hauk (Sackets Harbor, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) made the stop before senior Matt Siracusa (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) scooped up the groundball.
Junior Tim Clemente (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) led the Warriors with nine groundballs as he finished 11-of-18 in faceoffs. Junior Victor Marchetti (Corland, N.Y./Homer) posted three groundballs and two caused turnovers and senior Ryan O’Connor (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) added three groundballs.
Senior Alan Antinarelli (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) posted the win for the Warriors, allowing seven goals in 37:20, making five saves. Hauk added three saves in the final 22:40, allowing just one goal.
Pedroso posted three goals, five groundballs and an assist and Adams posted two goals and four groundballs. Andrew Kruter posted three caused turnovers and Ryan Lanigan and Scott Travers each posted eight groundballs.
Bryan Lockward took the loss in net for the Dutchmen, posting three saves and allowing seven goals.
The Warriors get back in action on Saturday, April 9, when they head to Manhattanville for a 1 p.m. MAC match.
