Eagles top Warriors in overtime, 9-8

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Down by two goals early in the fourth quarter, the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team fought back with a pair of goals, but Eastern University scored with 1:06 left in the first sudden-victory overtime to take away a 9-8 decision in Middle Atlantic Conference action at Olson Field on Saturday, April 16.

After a three-goal surge gave the Eagles (7-5 overall, 6-2 MAC) an 8-6 lead with 12:33 left, the Warriors (6-6 overall, 5-2 MAC) worked back into the game, as freshman Brett Farrell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) found sophomore Stephen Romano (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) for a goal with 7:30 left. With 3:04 left, junior Ben Walker (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) found the back of the net to tie the game.

From there, each team got an attempt, but only the Warriors could get a shot off before regulation ended, and Eagles’ keeper Aaron Benz made the stop. In overtime, the Eagles scored with 1:06 left, as Matt Soldano found Will Johnson for the goal.

Eastern leapt out to a 3-0 lead before sophomore Tom Lurie (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) found the back of the net. Romano added another goal to make it a one-goal game before Soldano scored for the Eagles to make it 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.

The Warriors fought back in the second quarter, as junior Ethan Payne (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) and Romano each scored to tie it and both teams alternated goals before the end of the quarter to make it 5-5 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Romano struck again before the Eagles started their three-goal run, with Will Johnson finding the back of the net with 12:33 left in regulation.

Romano led the Warriors with four goals, an assist and five groundballs and Walker added two goals. Junior Tim Clemente (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) added five groundballs and won 60 percent (12-of-20) of his faceoffs.

Johnson led the Eagles with three goals and three assists and Soldano added three goals and an assist. Chris Farrar also posted three assists and A.J. Ryan, Brendan Stouber and Ronald Johnson each posted six groundballs.

Benz made 16 saves in net to earn the win for the Eagles and senior Alan Antinarelli (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) also made 16 saves in net for the Warriors.

The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, April 19, when they head to DeSales for a Middle Atlantic Conference game at 4 p.m.
