MONTOURSVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) blasted two doubles and sophomore Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville) tossed a five-hitter in t he first game, but the Lycoming College softball team fell victim to a tough defensive effort from the University of Scranton, falling 2-1 and 7-1, in a non-conference doubleheader at Montoursville High School on Thursday, April 14.
Lansberry (6-3) pitched well for the Warriors (9-7 overall) in the first game, allowing just five hits, a walk and an earned run while striking out six in the first game, but the Royals (12-6 overall) were able to hold on after scoring two third-inning runs, which featured a double from Jacqueline Eadie, an RBI single from Tia Dimou and an unearned run that scored on a sac fly.
The Warriors cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, as Lansberry led off with an infield single. After a flyout, an error helped move Lansberry to third, where she scored on a double by Poorman. However, with runners on second and third, Samantha Boccolini got a strikeout to end the threat.
After that, only one more runner reached third base in the game and Lansberry finished the game by retiring the last seven batters of the game. Boccolini (5-3) wrapped up her own five-hitter, allowing just an unearned run and walking one. She also struck out one.
Kaitlyn Frazza was the lone player in the game with two hits, as she went 2-for-3 for the Royals.
In the second game, the Royals used five runs in the second and third innings to take control of the game en route to a 7-1 win. Scranton hurler Christine Capalbo (7-2) tossed a five-hitter, allowing just one run and a walk while striking out three.
The Royals strung together four hits in a three-run second, with Jamie Shackles delivering an RBI double in the frame. In the third, the team got back-to-back RBI doubles from Annie Zeleniak and Ashley Vosilla to score a pair of runs.
The Royals got single tallies in the fifth and sixth frames before the Warriors broke through, as Lansberry led off with a single. After a fielder’s choice and a foul out, Poorman delivered an RBI double to deep center.
Vosilla led the Royals, going 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI and Kristen Williams also added three hits and a run. Lansberry led the Warriors, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Senior Shauna Starr (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) (1-1) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing five runs in 2 1/3 innings.
The Warriors will hit the field again on Friday when they host No. 24 Lebanon Valley at James Short Park at 2 p.m. in Commonwealth Conference action.
