NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) tossed her first shutout of the season as the Lycoming College softball team split a pair of games on the third day of the National Collegiate Sports Invitational at the Central Park Sports Complex on Wednesday, March 16. Lansberry tossed a four-hitter as the Warriors pounded 17 hits in an 8-0 win over Arcadia in the second game of the day after the Warriors fell to Division II Barton, 7-0, in the morning contest.
Lansberry (3-0) posted five strikeouts and allowed four hits and two walks to lead the Warriors (4-2 overall) to the non-conference win over the Knights (6-2 overall).
Lycoming got on the board in the third inning of the game, as sophomore Brie Braga (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) started the rally with a double. Sophomore Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) followed with a single, setting up an RBI single from sophomore Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area). An error brought in Lesser with the second run.
In the fourth inning, freshman Katie Gross (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) started another two-run rally with a double before sophomore Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) followed with a single, who moved to second on the throw to keep Gross from scoring. Braga hit a sac fly to score Gross and Poorman added an RBI single to bring in Cline.
Lycoming clinched the win with four runs in the fifth inning to post the run-rule win, as freshman Abby Miller (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) singled before Gross hit a double to move the runners to second and third. Cline, Braga, Lesser and Poorman followed with four straight RBI singles.
Senior Shauna Starr (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) went 3-for-3 and Poorman went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Warriors. Lesser also went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Cline went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Braga went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a double. Miller went 2-for-3 with a run and Gross went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs.
In the opening game, the Warriors posted five hits, but fell to Division II Barton, 7-0. Sophomore Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) went 2-for-3 to lead the team offensively. Barton (10-16 overall) used a four-run third inning to take control of the game.
The Warriors wrap up their action at the Central Park Sports Complex on Thursday, March 16, as they face Suffolk at 11:30 a.m. before facing Principia at 1:30 p.m.
