WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Brett Farrell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and junior Ethan Payne (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) each scored two goals and the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team came within three goals early in the fourth quarter, but Ithaca College, receiving votes in the latest USILA Division III poll, was able to hold on for an 11-5 win at a rain-soaked Shangraw Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon, March 10.
Payne got the Warriors (1-3 overall) on the board midway through the first quarter, as Payne scored on a give from senior Josh Perrault (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan) to cut the Bombers’ lead to 2-1. However, Ithaca scored the next five goals to close out the half with a 7-1 lead.
As the rain started to come down harder, though, the Warriors’ offense started to click in the third quarter, with Payne finding Farrell on an inventive give-and-go, with Farrell leaping and finishing off the opportunity just outside the crease. Sophomore Stephen Romano (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) found Payne for a goal at the 4:59 mark.
In the fourth quarter, Farrell charged in and found the back of the net to make it 7-4 with 10:46 left. However, Ithaca (1-0 overall) got a pair of goals in the next two minutes. Off the next faceoff, sophomore Matt Doherty (Ocean Pines, Md./Stephen Decatur) picked up the groundball and found senior Matt Siracusa (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) for a tally to make it 9-5 with 8:44 left. However, Ithaca closed the game out with the final two tallies.
The Warriors were led by Payne, who posted two goals, an assist and three groundballs and Farrell, who notched a career-high tying two goals. In goal, senior Alan Antinarelli (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) posted 10 saves and added a team-high four groundballs. Both junior Victor Marchetti (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) and senior Victor Gonzalez (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) posted two caused turnovers.
