THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Junior Ethan Payne (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) finished off his hat trick 53 seconds into the first overtime to lift the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team to its first win in head coach Todd Hodgson’s tenure as head coach, 11-10, at SUNY Maritime in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 26.
Payne’s goal off a feed from sophomore Tom Lurie (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) capped off a come-from-behind win for the Warriors (1-1 overall), who tied the game with 1:54 left on a goal from freshman Brett Farrell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) on a dish from freshman Bryce Apple (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg).
After the Privateers won the faceoff in the overtime, the Warriors quickly got a turnover and after a timeout with 3:16 left in the period, Lurie found Payne for the golden goal just 11 seconds later.
The Warriors got on the board first, as Payne scored on a give from sophomore Stephen Romano (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township), before Romano scored his first of five goals with 5:22 left. Romano also added another tally with 2:26 left, but a goal late in the first quarter helped the Privateers (0-1 overall) close within a goal at 3-2.
In the second quarter, Romano gave the Warriors a two-goal cushion just 30 seconds in, but t he Privateers responded with three straight goals to take a 5-4 lead at the half.
The Warriors tied the game just 1:33 into the third quarter, as Farrell scored his first collegiate goal on a give from Romano. The Privateers took a 6-5 lead just 31 seconds later, but the Warriors responded with four goals in the next five minutes, with two coming from Romano, one from Payne and one from senior Josh Perrault (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan) to take a 9-7 lead.
The Privateers scored the next three goals, including a go-ahead goal from John Driscoll with a man-advantage with 8:36 left in the fourth quarter, setting up the dramatic end.
Romano finished with five goals and two assists for seven points, as he also tied for the team lead with four groundballs, and Payne added three goals and an assist. Farrell posted two goals and an assist and Lurie notched two assists. Seniors Tim Clemente (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and goalkeeper Alan Antinarelli (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) each added four groundballs and senior midfielder Luke VanEmburg (Orefield, Pa./Parkland) forced three turnovers.
Michael Hanratty posted three goals and Andrew Marklin added three assists to lead the Privateers. Seth Collins and Driscoll each added two goals. Seth Collins and Keith Messina each posted two groundballs and T.J. Beaudette added six groundballs and forced five turnovers.
Between the pipes, Antinarelli notched 11 saves to earn his first win of the year and Messina stopped 11 shots for the Privateers.
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday when they head to Corning East/Painted Post High School to face 13th-ranked Geneseo at 3:30 p.m.
