WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Kaitlyn Ober (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) increased her bid to become the Commonwealth Conference’s leading scorer as she poured in a game-high 20 points and the Lycoming College women’s basketball team outscored second-place Messiah by five points in the second half, but the Falcons held on for a 67-50 conference win in non-conference play on Tuesday night, Feb. 15, at Lamade Gym.
The game was Senior Day for the Warriors (9-15 overall, 4-9 Commonwealth), who honored Ober and fellow senior Rebecca Spencer (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy) were honored for their contributions before in a brief ceremony before the tip.
Ober finished with 20 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two assists, as she took a 0.3 point-lead in the battle for the conference’s scoring crown over Albright’s Jessica McGinness and Alvernia’s Angela Altemose. Elizabethtown’s Megan Strohman is 0.4 points behind Ober.
A three-point play from Ober tied the game at three early on, but from there, the Falcons (17-6 overall, 11-2 Commonwealth Conference) ignited on a 37-9 run to take a 40-12 lead with 3:00 left in the half. The Warriors scored the final six points in the stanza to cut the lead to 22 points during a run that featured another three-point play from Ober.
The Falcons shot 52 percent (15-for-29) and held a 20-10 lead in the rebounding category at the half, helping them to the lead.
The Falcons got the lead to 26 points a pair of times in the second half and the Warriors responded each time, cutting the lead to 19 with an 11-4 run capped by four straight points from freshman Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) with 10:26 left.
The Falcons never let the Warriors any closer and took a 24-point lead at 67-43 with 2:14 left, but the Warriors scored the last seven points of the game, five from Ober to make up the final 17-point margin. In the second half, the Warriors shot 41 percent (12-for29) while holding the Falcons to 31 percent (8-for-26) and held a 20-17 advantage on the glass.
Antonelli finished with 10 points and six rebounds and both sophomore Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and junior Chelsea Shearer (East York, Pa./Dallastown) each added six points. Scheller also posted six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Spencer posted four points, two assists and a block in her final game at Lamade Gym.
Dori Gyori posted 19 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three blocks to lead Messiah. Kira Maier posted 13 points and seven rebounds and Taylor Miller posted 12 points. Michele Schleich added four points, seven rebounds and a team-high five assists.
The Warriors wrap up their season at Widener on Saturday, Feb. 19 with a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader. The women will tip at 1 p.m. before the men follow at 3 p.m.
