Warriors fall to Benedictine at Las Vegas Hoopla

LAS VEGAS – Despite scoring 23 points off turnover and forcing 24 turnovers, the Lycoming College women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a hot-shooting Benedictine University team on Wednesday, Dec. 21, falling 78-60, in the consolation game of the Las Vegas Hoopla at the Centennial Hills Community Center.
 
The Warriors (5-5 overall) forced 24 turnovers and gave up just 14, as they scored more than 40 percent off their points off turnovers, but the Eagles (3-8 overall) took advantage of the possessions it kept, finishing the game with a 67 (22-for-33) percent effort from the floor and an even better 87 (33-for-38) percent from the free throw line.
 
Junior Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) led Lycoming with 13 points, three 3-pointers, two rebounds, two assists and five steals. Sophomore Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) added 10 points, two assists and two blocks and both senior Chelsea Shearer (East York, Pa./Dallastown) and freshman Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda Area) each added eight points.
 
The Warriors took a 17-10 lead 7:30 into the game thanks to a 10-5 run that was capped on a jumper by sophomore Victoria Kowalski (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland). The Eagles responded with 10 points over the next 5:30 to take a 20-17 lead before Scheller canned two of her three treys to give Lycoming the lead back. However, Benedictine went on a 14-7 run, hitting all six of its free throw attempts to end the half with a 34-27 lead.
 
In the second half, the Warriors couldn’t get closer than seven points, as the Eagles shot 65 percent from the floor and hit 17 free throws.
 
Kowalski finished with five points and freshman Ali Derr (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) added six points and three rebounds. Senior Erin Connaghan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) led the team with three assists.
 
Michelle Gaede and Tracey Walsh each led the Eagles with 17 points and Megan Novab added 12 points. Jillian Lipman posted 11 points, as she hit all eight of her free throws, and Katie Hunzinger posted six points and 10 rebounds. Kam Haifleigh added nine points, eight rebounds and three steals.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Thursday, Jan. 5, when they host Marywood at 7 p.m. in Lamade Gym.
