Derr, Antonelli’s double-doubles lift Warriors past Crusaders, 69-57

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Freshman Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) posted 16 points and 12 rebounds and sophomore Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) added 12 points and 10 boardsm as the Lycoming College women’s basketball team dominated the glass and shot a solid 46 percent to down Susquehanna, 69-57, at O.W. Houts Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 10, in non-conference action.
 
Junior Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) posted 23 points, as she canned four 3-pointers, and added five rebounds, two assists and three steals to lead the Warriors (5-3 overall), as they won for the fifth time in the last six games.
 
After shooting less than 20 percent in the first half in each of the last two games, the Warriors shot a hefty 50 (13-for-26) percent in the first half, helping them to open up a 17-point lead over the first 18 minutes of the half.
 
The Warriors took control of the game with a 13-2 run that was capped on a jumper by freshman Kat Andriani (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) with 12:20 left in the first half. A 3-pointer cut the lead to seven, but the Warriors scored the next six points, as Scheller hit a jumper with 7:41 left. The team kept rolling, as jumper by Derr brought the lead to 17 points with 5:00 left and a pair of free throws from Scheller with 2:00 left in the half made it 34-17. A 3-pointer from Susquehanna (2-6 overall), which shot just 31 percent in the game, cut the lead to 14 at the half.
 
Lycoming extended the lead to as many as 22 points at 46-24 in the second half before the Crusaders began to get back into the game, cutting the lead to 12 points with 7:50 left. The Warriors responded though, as Antonelli hit a jumper and Derr had four straight points to get the lead back to 18 points. Susquehanna cut the lead down nine points with 44 seconds left after their 10th 3-pointer of the game from Eleni Dimou, but Lycoming closed the game by hitting three of its last four from the line to complete the 69-57 win.
 
Sutton posted 12 points and added three assists and three rebounds and senior Erin Connaghan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) added four assists and three steals. Andriani also posted a career-high seven rebounds, helping Lycoming to a 45-32 advantage on the glass.
 
Korey McCaffrey finished with 12 points and five assists and both Gina Palazzi and Mariah Monahan posted 10 points for Susquehanna. Palazzi added eight rebounds and Dimou notched nine points and four steals.
 
The Warriors get back on the court after final exams by heading to the Las Vegas Hoopla by facing Dubuque at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET).
