WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) led the Lycoming College women’s basketball team with six of the squad’s 18 steals, helping the Warriors steal a 59-42 win over Penn State Altoona in non-conference action at Lamade Gym on Sunday, Nov. 27.

The Warriors (2-2 overall) stayed perfect against the Lady Lions (2-3 overall) at Lamade Gym, winning for the fourth time in as many meetings, as the team got several career highs, led by a career-high tying 18 points from senior Chelsea Shearer (East York, Pa./Dallastown). Freshman Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) set career highs with 12 points and eight rebounds and sophomore Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) added a career-high 14 points to go with eight points and two steals.

Scheller finished with 13 points, six assists and six steals as the point guard became the 21st player in school history to post 100 career thefts with her final steal of the game. Lycoming used its defensive pressure to force 26 Penn State Altoona turnovers while committing just 19.

The Warriors took control of the game early, thanks to the hot shooting of Shearer, as she posted a trey and hit a baseline jumper midway through the half to key a 10-0 Lycoming run that gave the team a 26-12 lead with 8:12 left. The lead grew to 16 points at 29-13 with 5:59 left after a layup by freshman Kat Andriani (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata), but the Lady Lions fought back with an 11-4 run to close within 33-24 at the half.

“They’re a guard-oriented team that we knew we had to slow down and force them to hit from the outside,” Lycoming head coach Christen Ditzler, whose Warriors held the Lions to 21 percent (4-for-19) from beyond-the-arc, said. “They do a good job of getting the ball to the basket and getting easier looks. Our zone forced them to shoot from the outside.”

Shearer hit a trey to start the scoring in the second half and added a fastbreak layup on a give from Scheller to help Lycoming take a 14-point lead. The Lady Lions never got back within 10 points and a layup by Derr with 57 seconds left gave Lycoming its largest lead of the game at 17 points.

Brittany Kawrelll led the Lady Lions with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks and Kaleigh Floyd added 14 points, six assists and four rebounds. Linzie Stahl posted six points and five rebounds.

Senior Erin Connaghan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) added four steals, two points, three assists and five rebounds and junior Emily Mixell (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser), Shearer and Antonelli each added two thefts a piece for Lycoming. The Warriors also held a 49-39 advantage on the glass.

The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Nov. 30, when they head to Alvernia to open their Commonwealth Conference season at 6 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men taking the court at 8 p.m.
