Sutton’s breakthrough performance leads Warriors to 61-50 win over Misericordia

DALLAS, Pa. – A 3-point play by freshman Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda Area) with 6:59 left in the game followed by a steal that led to a layup by freshman Heather Cunningham (York, Pa./Central York), helping the Lycoming College basketball team break the sixth tie of the game and the Warriors never looked back en route to a 61-50 non-conference win over 2011 Freedom Conference runners-up Misericordia at the Anderson Center on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
 
After the Cougars hit a two-pointer to come back within three, senior Chelsea Shearer (East York, Pa./Dallastown) canned her third three of the night and the Warriors (1-2 overall) never let the Cougars (1-3 overall) back within five points, as the Warriors hit 9-of-10 from the line in the final three minutes to seal the win.
 
The Warriors were hot from the field throughout the game, shooting 47.7 percent (21-for-44) from the field and 86.7 percent (13-for-15) while holding the Cougars to 34 percent (18-for-53) from the field. Lycoming also held a 36-26 advantage in rebounds.
 
After a 3-pointer from Tyann McDaniel gave the Cougars a 5-4 lead 4:13 into the game, the Warriors went on a 16-5 run over the next 10 minutes, led by back-to-back treys from sophomore Jess Knott (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) and junior Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy). After falling behind 20-10, the Cougars went on a 12-4 run to come within two points at 24-22 with 55 seconds left in the half. However, sophomore Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) hit a layup to give the Warriors a 26-22 lead heading into the half.
 
The Cougars tied the score with the first four points of the half, but the Warriors didn’t let the Cougars take the lead until a 7-0 run by the Cougars was capped with a 3-point play by Hannah Seely with 12:36 left. The teams traded the lead four times before a free throw from Misericordia’s Kayla Sileo tied the score at 41 with 7:53 left, setting up the Warriors’ clinching run.
 
Scheller finished with 17 points and five rebounds, as she hit all seven of her free throws. Sutton posted 13 points, a game-high seven rebounds, two assists and a steal and Antonelli added 11 points, five rebounds and four steals. Shearer added 11 points, three 3-pointers and three rebounds to round out the Warriors’ four players in double figures.
 
Preseason D3Hoops.com All-American Christine Marks posted 25 points and seven rebounds to lead the Cougars and both McDaniel and Seely posted nine points. Seely also added six steals and six rebounds.
 
The Warriors open their home campaign on Sunday, Nov. 27, when they face Penn State-Altoona at 1 p.m.
