Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) posted 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds and junior
Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) added 17 points and four steals, but the Lycoming College women’s basketball team fell victim to a Scranton squad that hit nine 3-pointers en route to a 66-55 win in the consolation game of the Gwynedd-Mercy College Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 19.
Scranton (1-2 overall) was led by 22 points and six 3-pointers from Alison Sweeney, as the Lady Royals hit 9-of-25 from deep. However, the Warriors (0-2 overall) outshot their opponents overall for the second game in a row, 35.2 percent to 33.3 percent.
The teams battled back and forth for much of the first period, with the Warriors coming back from a five-point deficit midway through the half to take a two-point lead after a jumper by sophomore
Victoria Kowalski (Mahapoc, N.Y./Lakeland) made it 20-18 with 5:54 left. The Royals scored the next 11 points though, led by a 3-pointer each from Sweeney and Christina Hiltunen, helping Scranton take a 29-21 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Royals continued the run, bringing the lead to 21 points at 56-35 with 6:35 left before the Warriors closed out the game on a 20-10 run, as Scheller led the run with seven points and both junior
Erin Connaghan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and Antonelli added four points.
Connaghan finished with five points, three rebounds and two steals and Kowalski also added five points. Freshman
Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda Area) added four points and two rebounds.
Sweeney led the Royals with 22 points and two steals and Erin Boggan posted 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Christina Hiltunen notched nine points and Katherine Torto posted six assists.
The Warriors get back on the court on Tuesday, Nov. 22, when they head to Misericordia, a 2011 Freedom Conference finalist, for a 6 p.m. contest.
