WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A desperation heave by junior Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) as the buzzer sounded saved the day for the Lycoming College men’s basketball team before the Warriors won the game at the free throw line in overtime, giving them a miraculous 90-86 win over the preseason CUNYAC favorite College of Staten Island at the Lamade Gym on Friday night, Nov. 18.

Down 80-77 with 1.3 seconds left, the Warriors (2-0 overall) inbounded the ball to Davis on the right side of the court and he launched a three-quarter court bomb that hit nothing but net to send the 978 fans in attendance into a frenzy.

“It’s not the kind of first game you want when you are playing in a tournament,” Lycoming head coach Guy Rancourt said, “especially when you have to turn around and play again in less than 24 hours. Jerald Williams was again himself, maintaining our pace and flow. The guys did a great job. Staten Island is a very good team. I’m very happy with how our guys responded.”

In overtime, the Warriors took an early two-point lead on a pair of free throws from junior Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King), and after a Staten Island free throw cut the lead to one, sophomore Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) connected on a layup to make it a 3-point lead. Another Warrior free throw got the lead to four points before a 3-pointer from Dale Taranto made it 87-86 with 23 seconds left. However, the Warrriors controlled the rest of the game, hitting three free throws, forcing two turnovers and one missed shot.

Down by 12 points with 13:02 left and by nine with nine minutes left, the Warriors ignited on an 11-1 run over a four-minute span, as Rudy capped the run with a fastbreak layup to give the Warriors a 68-67 lead and a jumper from sophomore Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) made it a three-point game, but nearly 2:30 minutes without a basket ended when preseason CUNYAC Player of the Year T.J. Tibbs dropped a 3-pointer to tie the game at 72. The teams fought through a tie and four lead changes in the waning minutes of regulation, as a jumper by Bloochy Magloire and two free throws gave the Dolphins (0-1 overall) a three-point lead with 1.3 seconds remaining.

The Dolphins controlled much of the first half, taking a 26-21 lead with 8:05 left before the Warriors rallied to take a 33-28 lead with 5:43 left in the half. However, in the final 4:07 of the half, the Dolphins went on a 9-1 run to take a 42-35 lead into the break which they extended to 58-46 seven minutes into the second half. Magloire led the Dolphins with 21 points in the first frame.

Anthony finished with 23 points, three rebounds, two blocks and a steal and Davis notched 18 points and five rebounds. He became the 12th player in school history to can 100 3-pointers in his career with his first of three trifectas.

Martin posted 14 points, two blocks and two assists and Bradley finished with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Junior Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) had a spectacular game, finishing with seven points, 14 assists and four steals. Freshman Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) added eight points.

Magloire posted 33 points to lead the Dolphins and Tibbs added 24 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. Jordan Young notched 11 points and 13 rebounds and Herschel Jenkins posted eight points and nine rebounds.
