WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College volleyball team will look to win their sixth Tip-Off Classic championship in the 14
th running of the event at Lamade Gym, as the Warriors welcome in Ithaca, Misericordia and McDaniel for the two-day event which begins at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7.
Each of the four teams in the tournament will engage in a round-robin challenge, facing each of the other three teams, with the first and second rounds being held on Friday night before the final round is held on Saturday at 10 a.m. After that, the team’s will be seeded for the championship round at 12:30 p.m., with the top two teams meeting in the championship on the main court in the gym and the third- and fourth-place teams meeting in the consolation on the second court.
Admission for the tournament is free.
The Warriors (9-7 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth) enter the tournament having won six of their last eight matches and are still in the thick of the hunt to earn their first Commonwealth Conference playoff bid since joining the league in 2007, currently sitting in a tie for fourth with Albright for the final playoff slot. Lycoming is led by junior
Jackie Oliva (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area), who is second in the league with a .319 hitting percentage and fourth at 2.84 kills per game. Sophomore
Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) is also developing into one of the best setters in the league, sitting third in assists at 7.93 per set and second in service aces at 0.49 per set.
Ithaca enters the tournament with a 9-11 record after suffering a tough 3-2 loss to 18
th-ranked SUNY Cortland on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Senior Chelsea Hayes was one of four to post double-doubles in the match for the Bombers as she tallied a career- and match-high 22 kills and a team-best 15 digs. Kate Thoene leads the team with 2.79 kills per set.
Misericordia enters Lamade Gym with a 6-7 record after posting a 3-0 win over King’s on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Cailin McCullion led Misericordia with 11 kills and three aces while Carly Zaklukiewicz had seven kills and five aces. McCullion leads the Cougars with 2.88 kills and 3.49 digs per set.
McDaniel enters the tournament with a 0-15 mark after falling to Dickinson, 3-0, on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The Green Terror is led by Jaina Maultsby, who averages 1.42 kills per set, and Anne McShea, who averages 1.25 kills and 2.12 digs per set.
The Warriors kick off the tournament at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 by facing Ithaca before playing Misericordia in the second round at 7 p.m. In the final round of the round robin on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m., the Warriors will face McDaniel.
