Warriors fall to Pride in four sets

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. –
Sophomore Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) and junior Jackie Oliva (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area) each finished with double-digit kills to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team, but Widener University used a 63 percent side-out percentage to post a 3-1 (25-14, 17-25, 25-15, 25-20) win on Wednesday, Oct. 12 in Commonwealth Conference action at Lamade Gym.
 
The Warriors (11-10 overall, 2-3 Commonwealth) fell into a three-way tie for fourth-place with Albright and Elizabethtown with two conference matches to play, as Elizabethtown beat Alvernia, 3-0. The Warriors still have to face seventh-place Alvernia and fourth-place Albright in the final two matches. If they win both, they will make the Commonwealth Conference playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2007. Widener improved to 14-7 overall and 4-1 in the Commonwealth Conference.
 
Gear posted 11 kills and added four blocks and Oliva notched 10 kills, four digs and three blocks for the Warriors. Sophomore Lacey Sollenberger (New Enterprize, Pa./North Bedford) added nine kills and four digs and freshman Amber Seibel (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) added eight kills and 20 digs. Sophomore Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain North) added 32 assists and eight digs and sophomore Kassidy Sedore (Stormville, Pa./Spackenkill) notched 23 digs.
 
The Pride jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first set and the lead grew to 20-10 en route to the 25-14 win. The Warriors fought back in the second set, jumping out to a 10-3 lead, but the Pride fought back to within four points at 13-9. However, the lead grew to seven points at 17-10 thanks to a 4-1 run that featured two kills from Sollenberger. From there, the Warriors closed out a 25-17 win.
 
In the third set, the Pride jumped out to a 10-3 lead en route to the 25-15 win. In the fourth set, the teams battled through 10 ties and four lead changes before a pair of kills from Nicole Merton gave the Pride a 21-19 lead en route to the 25-20 win.
 
Merton finished with 12 kills and four blocks and Alectra Edison added 10 kills and four blocks for the Pride. Jamie Ballew posted 46 assists and Meghan Spence notched 25 digs. Angela DiMaria notched nine kills and 23 digs.
 
The Warriors head to the Posada Royale Fall Classic at California Lutheran University, facing Wisconsin Lutheran on Friday, Oct. 14 at 5 p.m. PT and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7 p.m. PT.
