Warriors’ balanced effort falls short at Marywood, 73-64

SCRANTON, Pa. – Four Lycoming College women’s basketball players finished in double figures on Tuesday night, Jan. 4, but Marywood University closed the game with six free throws in the final minute to clinch a 73-64 win at Insalaco Arena in non-conference action.

Sophomore Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) led the Warriors (5-7 overall) with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists and senior Rebecca Spencer (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy) added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Senior Kaitlyn Ober (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) added 13 points, two assists and two blocks and freshman Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) added 10 points and eight rebounds.

With the score tied at 56 with 6:14 left, the Pacers (7-4 overall) used a 5-0 run to take control of the game as they hit three free throws and Allison Bruett added a layup. A layup from Antonelli cut the lead to three points, but Brittany Mang hit back-to-back layups to help the Pacers take a 65-58 lead with 3:31 left.

A pair of free throws from junior Erin Connaghan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) brought the Warriors back within three points at 67-64 with 1:53 left, but the Pacers closed the game with six free throws on as many shots. Jamie Halloran hit the final four free throws of the game.

Each team fought through several lead changes and ties during the opening 14 minutes of the second half, with neither team taking a more than five-point lead, coming when Scheller canned a 3-pointer to give Lycoming a 48-43 lead with 13:00 left. A 3-point play and a layup helped the Pacers tie the score just 2:25 later and set up the closing minutes.

The teams fought back and forth through the early moments of the game, with each team taking a four-point lead early, as the Pacers took a 16-12 lead with 10:31 left before the Warriors went on a 15-3 run capped by a free throw from Antonelli that gave the Warriors a 27-19 lead with 6:36 left in the half.

A 3-pointer from junior Chelsea Shearer (East York, Pa./Dallastown) helped the Warriors take a 34-25 left with 2:49 left in the half, but the Pacers closed the half on an 8-2 run to make the score 36-33 at halftime.

Marywood, who scored 25 points off 21 Lycoming turnovers, was led by 15 points, five rebounds and four assists from Mariah Schaeffer and 13 points and nine rebounds from Jamie Halloran. Lauren Rogan posted 11 points and Bruett posted eight points and three steals.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 8 for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader against Widener that will get underway at 1 p.m. with the women’s game before the men tip at 3 p.m.
