WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Kaitlyn Ober (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) posted 16 points and seven rebounds, but the Lycoming College women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a 14-point halftime deficit as Alvernia University handed head coach Kevin Calabria his 400th career win, 73-53, on Saturday afternoon at Lamade Gym in Commonwealth Conference action.

The Warriors (6-11 overall, 2-5 Commonwealth) were led by Ober, who also added two blocks, as she scored in double figures for the ninth time in 11 games and crossed the 750-career point mark. Ober was the lone Warrior in double figures, but senior Rebecca Spencer (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy) added eight points and five rebounds and both junior Erin Connaghan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and freshman Victoria Kowalsi (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) added six.

Sophomore Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) added seven assists and three steals and freshman Jessica Knott (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) notched three assists, three steals and a career-high three blocks. The Warriors forced the Crusaders into a season-high 25 turnovers, picking up 14 steals.

Calabria, who has posted 400 wins over 22 seasons, starting at Alvernia in 1989-90, got solid performances from Angela Altemose, who posted 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, and Shanaye Glenn, who added 20 points and five rebounds, as the Crusaders (10-7 overall, 4-3 Commonwealth) shot 42 (27-for-64) percent from the field.

With the score tied at nine with 14:51 left in the first half, a 3-pointer from Altemose started an 11-0 Alvernia run and the Warriors could cut the lead to single digits just four more times in the first half, with the last coming on a jumper from Ober with 2:53 left in the half to make it a nine-point game. However, the Crusaders scored the last five points in the half to go to the locker room with a 35-21 lead.

In the second half, the Crusaders never let the Warriors within 14 points and led by as many as 25 at 72-47 with three minutes left. One of Kowalski’s two 3-pointers helped the Warriors cut into that margin and finish the game on a 6-1 run.

Brittany Young added 10 points and Kayla Long had 10 rebounds for the Crusaders.

The Warriors head into the halfway point of the Commonwealth Conference season in a tie for fifth place at 2-5. They are two games behind the Crusaders, who are 4-3, who sit fourth in the league and in the last of the league’s playoff slots.

The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Jan. 26, when Wilkes comes to Lamade Gym for the final non-conference game of Lycoming’s season at 7 p.m.
