Kelly’s double-double not enough as Warriors fall at E-town, 76-66

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Senior Will Kelly (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) posted 18 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season, but the Lycoming College men’s basketball team fell to a hot-shooting Elizabethtown College, 76-66, in Commonwealth Conference action on Wednesday night, Jan. 19, at Thompson Gymnasium.

Kelly led the Warriors (12-5 overall, 2-4 Commonwealth), hitting three 3-pointers to go with a steal and a blocked shot as he moved within 20 points of becoming the 25th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Elizabethtown (12-3 overall, 4-2 Commonwealth), meanwhile, had five players finish in double figures as it shot 50 percent (28-for-56) from the floor.

The Blue Jays took a 26-12 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game and were able to stretch the lead to as many as 18 at 42-25 with 2:15 left in the half before the Warriors cut the lead to 14 at halftime by scoring the last four points of the half.

In the second half, a free throw from Dan Silver gave the Blue Jays a 58-35 lead with 13:41 left, but the Warriors fought back with a 26-9 run over the next eight minutes, capping the run with a tip-in by Kelly with 5:05 left. Sabella scored seven points, Anthony added six and Kelly posted five during the run.

However, Brian Allport ended the run with a 3-pointer, starting a 6-0 run as the Warriors couldn’t come within single digits in the final four minutes.

Freshman Kevin Anthony (Atlanta, Ga./Bridgton Academy) added 11 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals and senior Sebastian Sabella (Bayside, N.Y./Episcopal School) notched 11 points and four rebounds and junior Mike Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) notched nine points, eight rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) posted six assists and three steals.

The Blue Jays were led by 16 points, two blocks and seven rebounds from Allport, and 14 points from Joe Flanagan. Bryan Harrity and Keith Fogel each posted 11 points and Mark Vogel posted 10. Kyle McConnell added 12 assists and five steals.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 22, when they host Commonwealth Conference foe Alvernia in a key matchup against the league leaders set for 3 p.m. at Lamade Gym.
