Antonelli’s career-high 20 points not enough as Warriors fall to Knights

GLENSIDE, Pa. – Freshman Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) posted a career-high 20 points and senior Kaitlyn Ober (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) notched her third double-double of the season, but the Lycoming College women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a hot-shooting Arcadia University, falling 74-62, in Commonwealth Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 15.

Antonelli had a solid day offensively for the Warriors (5-10 overall, 1-4 Commonwealth), posting 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting, adding six rebounds and a career-high four assists. Ober posted 17 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists and two steals.

A 16-4 run by Arcadia (6-8 overall, 1-4 Commonwealth) early in the second half, helped the Knights take a 55-45 lead with 8:08 left. The Warriors cut the lead to six points after a layup from sophomore Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) at 55-49 with 6:12 left. However, the team could not get closer than that and the Knights extended the lead to as many as 14 points with a 10-3 run in the closing minutes of the half.

The two teams battled through seven ties and five lead changes in the first half, with the Knights taking a 24-19 lead after a layup by Jackie Law with 5:59 left, but the Warriors cut the lead to one with a pair of free throws from Antonelli and a layup by junior Chelsea Shearer (East York, Pa./Dallastown). The Knights extended the lead to six points at 33-27 with 2:18 left in the half, but the Warriors responded with six straight points, with a free throw from Scheller tying the game at 33 with 58 seconds left in the half. Each team traded a pair of baskets to head into the half tied at 35.

Shearer added 10 points, two 3-pointers, an assist and a steal and Scheller posted eight points, five assists and five steals for the Warriors, who shot a solid 47 percent (24-for-51) in the game.

Four Knights finished in double figures, as they shot 51 percent (25-for-49) from the field, led by 19 points and three assists from Christine Taylor. Angie Adams added 15 points, eight assists and two steals and Jackie Law added 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals. Corrine Geiger also notched 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.

The Warriors stay on the road for a doubleheader at Elizabethtown on Wednesday, Jan. 19, with the women’s teams tipping at 6 p.m. and the men’s teams starting at 8 p.m.
