ANNVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and junior Chelsea Shearer (East York, Pa./Dallastown) each scored 12 points for the Lycoming College women’s basketball team, but a hot performance from behind the arc by No. 15 Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday night, Jan. 12, helped the Flying Dutchmen down the Warriors, 71-51, in Commonwealth Conference action at the LVC Gymnasium.
The Dutchmen (14-1 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth) pulled away in the last six minutes of the first half, breaking a 20-20 tie, going on a 17-7 run over the next eight minutes to span the two halves. The Warriors (5-9 overall, 0-4 Commonwealth) closed within seven points with a 3-pointer from Scheller, but a pair of layups from Renee Fritz and Caitlin Murphy, starting a 16-7 LVC run that gave the Dutchmen a 53-37 lead with 10:23.
A 3-pointer from freshman Jessica Knott (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) with 7:57 left brought the Warriors back within 10 points at 53-43, but a 3-pointer by Lauren Ruhl, one of LVC’s seven threes in 12 tries, kept the Warriors from cutting the lead into single digits.
The Warriors fell behind 10-4 in the first seven minutes, but the Warriors used the middle part of the first half to cut into the lead, with a 3-point play from Shearer cutting the lead to three points with 10:08 left and a 3-pointer with 7:37 left from Shearer cutting the lead to two points before a pair of free throws from Scheller ended a 16-10 Warrior run to tie the game at 20.
Scheller lead the Warriors with 12 points, three rebounds and two steals and Shearer posted 12 points and four rebounds. She also became the 28th player in school history to hit 25 3-pointers in a season with her one trey.
Senior Kaitlyn Ober (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) posted eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds to go with two blocks and freshman Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) notched eight points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior Erin Connaghan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) added four points and four rebounds.
Andrea Hoover scored 13 points and added nine rebounds and seven assists to lead the Dutchmen. Liz Borgia added 11 points and six assists and Murphy posted 11 points, seven steals and two blocks. Lauren Ruhl posted 12 points and four rebounds.
The Warriors stay on the road for a doubleheader on Saturday at Arcadia, with the women’s game tipping at 1 p.m. before the men play at 3 p.m. The Knights are the first team that the Warriors have played in six games that will enter the game with a non-winning record.
