ANNVILLE, Pa. – After seeing its own longest win streak in the Commonwealth Conference snapped with a one-point loss to Widener on Saturday, Jan. 8, the Lycoming College men’s basketball team did some streak-snapping of their own, stopping Lebanon Valley’s conference-long four-game win streak with a 74-68 win at the LVC Gymnasium on Wednesday night, Jan. 12.
The Warriors (11-4 overall, 1-3 Commonwealth) opened up a 14-point lead at 33-19 late in the first half, but the Dutchmen came all the way back to make it 55-53 with 7:02 left before the Warriors pulled away thanks to a five-point run from sophomore Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King), who hit a layup with 6:46 left. After each team traded a pair of buckets, Davis hit a 3-pointer to give Lycoming a 62-57 lead with 2:15 left and from there, the Dutchmen couldn’t get back within five until a Joe Meehan jumper with six seconds left. Davis iced the game, the Warriors’ first win in four tries against the Dutchmen, with a free throw.
“If we can come out of this stretch on the road of three of four on the road, I think we can get ourselves into position to get back in the hunt,” Lycoming head coach Guy Rancourt said.
Davis and freshman Kevin Anthony (Atlanta, Ga./Bridgton Academy) led the Warriors with 17 points a piece, while Anthony notched 12 rebounds for his team-leading third double-double of the season. Senior Sebastian Sabella (Bayside, N.Y./Episcopal School) added 12 points, four rebounds and two blocks.
The Warriors shot 50 percent (25-for-50) from the field and added a 73 percent (22-for-30) effort from the line, helping to make up for 21 LVC points off turnover. The Warriors’ defense also held strong, holding the Dutchmen to just 34 percent (25-for-74) from the field.
The Warriors’ high-flying offense came out strong from the start of the game, as they took a 20-5 lead after a layup from freshman Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville) with 11:58 left in the half, capping a 16-0 run for the Warriors. Davis, Sabella and Anthony each had four points during the run.
The Warriors maintained a double-digit lead for the next six minutes before back-to-back layups from Danny Brooks and Joe Meehan brought the Dutchmen back within seven points at 26-19. In a theme repeated in the second half, though, Davis stopped the run with a trey and buckets from Rudy and Sabella helped the Warriors take a 37-23 lead into halftime.
After the teams traded buckets to start the second half, the Dutchmen worked the lead down to five points before the Warriors answered with a 6-1 run to take a 51-41 lead with 12:18 left. However, LVC fought back with six straight points from Anthony Trautman to make it 51-47.
The Warriors scored the next four points, but the Dutchmen answered with six straight points to make it 55-53 and setting up the game’s final moments.
Anthony led the Warriors with nine points and eight rebounds in the second half, as the forward grabbed four rebounds in the game’s final two minutes.
“It’s still a learning experience for Kevin,” Rancourt said. “I thought he did a great job with energy. He gave us 100 miles an hour tonight.”
Senior Will Kelly (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) posted eight points and nine rebounds and Rudy added eight points, five rebounds and a career-high three blocks for the Warriors.
Trautman led the Dutchmen with 22 points and four rebounds and Joe Meehan notched 13 points, 10 assists and five steals. Danny Brooks posted 13 points and seven boards and Grant Becker also added 12 points and seven rebounds.
