WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore #Leslie Kester# (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township)led the Lycoming College women’s soccer team on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 8, posting a goal and two assists to help lift the Warriors to their first win of the season, 4-2, in the home opener over Lancaster Bible at the Shangraw Complex.
Kester, who entered the game with six career points on three goals, moved into double figures in career points with the four on Wednesday. Senior Kaitlin Horn (Ringtown, Pa./North Schuylkill) added her 20th career goal and an assist in the match, becoming the fifth player in school history to reach the 20-goal milestone. Senior forward Kati Shaner (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) also added a goal and assist for the Warriors (1-1 overall).
The Chargers (2-2 overall) drew first blood in the game, as Kristina Clairmont beat the keeper on a one-timer from 12 yards out, but the Warriors answered 80 seconds later and never looked back, as Shaner used a pass to draw the keeper and Horn collected the pass and hit the shot from 10 yards out.
The Warriors took the lead in the 36th minute as Horn fired a high arching kick over the keeper and to the waiting foot of Shaner. Kester also assisted on the play, getting the ball to Horn from 30 yards out. Just over a minute later, freshman #Lauren Dawes# (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) found Kester, who blasted a shot into the left corner from 20 yards out, giving the Warriors a 3-2 lead.
Clairmont brought the Chargers within a goal by going on a breakaway, beating the defense and hitting a shot into the center of the net. The Warriors clamped down from there, though, allowing just one shot in the second period.
Meanwhile, the Warriors added the insurance goal in the 72nd minute, as Kester struck a corner and freshman Spencer Larson (Edgewater, Md./South River) headed it into the net.
Freshman #Caitlin Dougherty# (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) earned the win in goal. Lancaster Bible’s Emily Lloyd made seven saves in net, allowing four goals, as Lycoming held a 20-6 advantage in shots. The Warriors also posted eight corners while the Chargers had just three.
Lycoming gets back on the field on Saturday with the Battle of the Lumber, facing Penn College in the newly-created trophy game at 4:30 p.m. at the Shangraw Complex.
