Schulze’s career-high 18 kills paces Warriors to 3-2 win over Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
– Down 22-20 in the fourth set of Tuesday, Sept. 7’s match against Penn College, seniors Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) and Kelly Rose (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Bishop Hogan) provided some leadership, as the pair combined to score four points during a critical 5-1 run by the Lycoming College volleyball team, as the team rallied for a 3-2 (24-26, 25-13, 24-26, 25-23, 15-8) win over the Wildcats at Lamade Gymnasium.

Schulze was dominating during the match, posting a career-high 18 kills, hitting a hot .536, and added six blocks for the Warriors (2-1). Rose also played well, posting 11 kills and hitting .333. Freshman Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) joined the seniors with double-figure kills, posting 10 and adding a match-high seven blocks to go with four digs and three assists.

Freshman Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added her second double-double with 32 points and 11 assists to go with five aces and junior Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) posted 29 digs and two kills. Freshman Tanya DeWalt (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) added seven kills, six blocks and three digs. Sophomore Jackie Oliva (Barnesville, Pa./Mahoney Area) added six kills, three digs and two blocks.

The Warriors took a 10-5 lead in the fourth set after a block by DeWalt and freshman Lacey Sollenberger (New Enterprize, Pa./North Bedford), but the Wildcats fought back with a 12-3 run to take a 17-13 lead. The Warriors closed within two within a point at 19-18 and the teams traded sideouts until the Warrior seniors took over to close out the set.

Lycoming dominated the fifth stanza, hitting .409 and committing just two attack errors, as Schulze led the team with four kills in the set. Sollenberger, Gear and Rose each added two kills as the Warriors took an 8-4 lead and never let the Wildcats back within three points.

The Warriors jumped out to a 21-12 lead in the first set after a block by DeWalt and Gear, but the Wildcats stormed back by going on a 14-3 run to take the 26-24 win. Lycoming fought back, though, hitting a solid .367 in the second set and rolling out to a 17-7 lead en route to the 25-13 win. In the third set, the Wildcats took a 20-13 lead before Lycoming fought back to tie the set at 23 after a kill by Rose. However, with the set tied at 24, Penn College closed the set with two points, as Montiero served up an ace to take the set.

Lindsay Moyer posted 13 kills to lead the Wildcats (3-3) and Lyndsey Smith posted 31 assists. Ashley Matson-Donahay posted 12 digs and six aces and Paula Montiero added 15 digs and four kills. Tara Powell nearly missed a double-double with nine kills and 13 digs.

The Warriors head to the Montclair State Tournament this weekend, as they start the tournament by facing Montclair State at 3 p.m. on Friday. The Warriors will also face SUNY Cortland at 7 p.m. during the first day of the tournament.
