Warriors fall at Widener, 3-0

CHESTER, Pa. – Junior Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) used 20 digs to become the first player in school history to reach 1,700 in a career, but Widener downed the Lycoming College volleyball team, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-16), in a Commonwealth Conference match on Wednesday night, Sept. 29, despite a solid defensive effort from the Warriors.

Abel, who has led the Commonwealth Conference in digs in each of the last two years, finished with a match-high 20 digs to give her 1,711 in her career.

Freshman Tanya DeWalt (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) posted eight kills, six blocks and four digs in a solid effort for the Warriors (6-8 overall, 0-3 Commonwealth). Senior Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) added two kills, three blocks and 13 digs and freshman Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added nine assists, nine digs, two blocks and two aces.

“We played better,” Lycoming head coach Tim McMahon said. “We were a little more scrappy, but we gave up some points on a couple runs. Hopefully, this will help us step up this weekend and heading into next week when we play Lebanon Valley.

The Pride (12-8 overall, 2-1 Commonwealth) were led by nine kills, four digs and four blocks from Shauna Phillips and eight kills and five digs from Angela DiMaria. Both Meghan Spence and Erin Gravelle added 15 digs, with Spence posting six aces. Jamie Ballew posted 26 assists and four digs and Jennifer Mastantoni notched 10 digs.

The Warriors next return home to Lamade Gymnasium for a MAC Crossover quad-match on Saturday, facing King’s at 10:30 a.m. before facing Misericordia at 1 p.m. Albright will face Misericordia at 10:30 and King’s will face Albright at 1 p.m. on the second court at Lamade.
