WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Tanya DeWalt (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) posted 20 kills, hit .405, and added nine blocks and eight digs to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team during its tri-match at Lamade Gymnasium on Saturday, Sept. 18, as the Warriors downed Wilkes, 3-1, in the opener before falling to Baptist Bible, 3-0, in the afternoon.
In the first match, near double-doubles from DeWalt and senior #Megan Schulze# (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) and a double-double from freshman setter Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) helped pace the Warriors to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 25-27, 25-19) win over Wilkes.
McKillop posted 29 assists and 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season while middle hitter DeWalt posted 11 kills, eight blocks and four digs and Schulze added 10 kills, nine digs and five blocks.
The team had a solid-hitting performance, notching a .267 (55-19-125) hitting percentage in the game, with both freshmen Chelsee Strine (South Boardman, Mich./Forest Area) and Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) each adding nine kills.
Junior #Emily Abel# (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) paced the defense at the libero spot, posting 22 digs to go with three kills.
The Warriors (6-6 overall) got out to a hot start, taking a 6-2 lead after a kill by sophomore #Jackie Oliva# (Barnesville, Pa./Mahoney Area). From there, the team extended the lead to as many as eight, after an ace by McKillop made it 21-13. The teams traded sideouts from there, as the Warriors took the 25-17 decision.
In the second set, a seven-point service from Schulze that included two aces helped the Warriors take a 9-2 lead and the Colonels (6-7 overall) never closed within five points after that as Lycoming went on for a 25-15 win.
The teams battled back-and-forth in the third set, with Wilkes taking a 20-15 lead but the Warriors using a 9-4 run to tie it at 24 after a kill by DeWalt. The Warriors even had a match point after a kill from Gear, but the Colonels scored the next three points to take the set, 27-25.
Lycoming took the momentum back in the fourth set after it was tied at eight, as junior setter Amy Sharlow (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) posted eight points on her service, giving the Warriors a 16-8 lead. The Colonels never got closer than five the rest of the way, as a kill by Strine closed out the 25-19 Warrior win.
Marissa Harrison posted 13 kills to lead Wilkes and Emily DeBuck added nine kills, four digs and two blocks. Kate McGurk posted eight kills, 22 assists and six digs. Erin Nothstein posted 14 digs and two aces.
In the second match, the Defenders hit a solid .265 led by nine kills from Brittany Floyd, as it went on to sweep the Warriors, 25-18, 25-17, 25-19.
DeWalt posted nine kills, hitting .375, and four digs to lead the Warriors. Gear added five kills, three aces and three digs and freshman #Lacey Sollenberger# (New Enterprize, Pa./North Bedford) added four kills and four digs. Schulze posted six digs, three kills and a block and Abel added eight digs. Sharlow added eight digs and seven assists.
The Defenders (6-7 overall) scored the first eight points in the first set en route to the 25-18 win. In the second set, an 11-4 run midway through the set helped the Defenders take control and in the third, Marlie Kneifel served for five straight points to help Baptist Bible take an 18-14 lead. The Warriors closed within a point, but couldn’t get any closer.
Jessica White posted eight kills, nine digs and three aces and Kneifel added five kills, four aces and four digs. Laura Hoddup had 12 digs and Katelin Broughton posted 29 assists.
The Warriors get back in action on Tuesday when they head to Albright for a Commonwealth Conference matchup at 7 p.m.
