LANCASTER, Pa. – Thanks to a hot-hitting night from the freshmen trio of Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili), Tanya DeWalt (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) and Lacey Sollenberger (New Enterprize, Pa./North Bedfored) combined to post 33 kills as the Lycoming College volleyball team defeated Lancaster Bible, 3-2 (25-23, 25-16, 24-26, 20-25, 15-9) on Monday night, Sept. 13, coming back after dropping the third and fourth sets to take the final set at the Horst Athletic Center.
Gear finished the night with 14 kills and a .423 hitting percentage to go with eight digs, seven blocks and two aces and DeWalt added 10 kills, a .364 hitting percentage, seven blocks and two assists as the Warriors improved to 5-4. Sollenberger added nine kills and a .278 hitting percentage.
Junior Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) notched 24 digs and freshman Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 25 assists, eight digs and three aces. Junior Amy Sharlow (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) added 15 assists and five digs and senior Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) added four kills, four blocks and three digs.
The Warriors hit well in the first two sets, hitting .280 in the first before hitting a solid .455 (10-0-22) in the second to take a 2-0 lead before the Chargers (3-5 overall) spoiled four Warrior match points in the third set before taking it, 26-24, with a closing 6-0 run. The Chargers added a 25-20 win in the fourth set before the Warriors closed out the win in the fifth set by taking a 9-4 lead, led by three kills from Gear. It took two match points before Gear closed out the win with a kill to take the final set, 15-9.
In the first set, the Warriors used their own 6-0 run to close out a set after falling behind, 23-19, as senior Kelly Rose (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Bishop Hoban) and Gear started the run with a block and DeWalt posted two kills to close out the win.
In the second set, the Warriors jumped out to an 18-9 lead, thanks to a 9-3 run paced by two service aces from freshman Shaina Preiss (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton). From there, the Warriors held on for the nine-point win.
Peggy Compton posted a triple-double for the Chargers, notching 14 kills, 13 assists, 13 digs and three blocks and Hailee Growdon added 12 kills and 16 assists. Lauren Heliger also posted five kills and 11 digs.
The Warriors return to Lamade Gymnasium on Wednesday night when they open their Commonwealth Conference season by facing Alvernia at 7 p.m. Lancaster Bible beat the Crusaders, 3-2, on Sept. 9.
