Lycoming women’s soccer set to host the first Battle of the Lumber against Penn College on Saturday

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – When the Penn College women’s soccer team makes the short trek two miles across town to the Shangraw Athletic Complex, it will be carrying with it a new wrinkle in its rivalry with Lycoming College, as the two squads will face off in the first Battle for the Lumber on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 4:30 p.m.

The rivalry between the two schools, especially in women’s soccer, is just reaching its fruition, as the teams have played just twice, with the Warriors notching a 4-0 win in 2008 and 2-0 win in 2009. However, due to the school’s proximity, it has already become a natural and heated rivalry.

Penn College will bring the trophy to the game, as the two colleges have named the trophy game after the history of the city of Williamsport as the Lumber Capitol of the World in the late 1800s. Perhaps appropriately, the trophy will likely pass just a block from Millionaire’s Row en route to the Shangraw Complex. Millionaire’s Row is the most visible remaining link to that period, as large 100-plus year-old mansions line the street, showing the unique prosperity that the city embraced during that period.

Lycoming (1-1 overall) rebounded from a season-opening loss at Misericordia by posting a 4-2 win over Lancaster Bible on Wednesday. Sophomore #Leslie Kester# (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) led the Warriors with a goal and two assists in the win over the Chargers and senior Kaitlin Horn (Ringtown, Pa./North Schuylkill) leads the team with five points on two goals and an assist through the first two games this year. Horn is currently second in the Commonwealth Conference, averaging 2.50 points per game.

Penn College (1-0 overall) opened its year with a 10-0 win over Davis, helping Kimberly Daley currently rank first in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association in scoring after posting four goals and eight points. Teammate Jocelyn Moyer is tied for third with seven points after posting three goals and an assist.

Admission to the Battle for the Lumber is free.

The men’s soccer teams at the two schools will engage in the Battle for the Lumber rivalry next Saturday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Balls Mills Soccer Complex.
