Box Score Dallas, Pa. – A late goal from senior Kaitlin Horn (Ringtown, Pa./North Schuylkill) was not enough for the Lycoming College women’s soccer team in its season-opener, as Misericordia used two second-half goals to take a 2-1 decision on Sept. 1.
After a scoreless first half in which Lycoming keeper Caitlin Dougherty (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) turned in five saves, Misercordia’s forward Sam Helmstetter found the net in the 50th minute to break the scoreless tie, powering in a header off a corner kick.
Seven minutes later, Laura Roney turned in a goal of her own pushing past the defense on a breakaway to take a 2-0 lead.
The Warriors (0-1 overall) fought back, as Horn dented the twine by getting to a scramble after a corner kick. The goal was the 19th of the senior’s career, moving her just one shy of becoming the fifth player in school history to post 20 in a career.
Dougherty made eight saves in goal, as Misericordia posted 19 shots in the contest. The Warriors turned in seven shots, forcing Morgan Myers to make three saves. Roney led the Cougars (1-0) with a goal and an assist.
The Lady Warriors get back on the field when they open their home slate by facing Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 4:30 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
