Men's lacrosse picks up 11-2 road win over Lebanon Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team paced its scoring through four quarters en route to an 11-2 win over Lebanon Valley College on Tuesday, April 27. The Warriors scored three goals in the first, third and fourth quarters and two in the second.

The Warriors (10-5, 8-2) took control early in the game, not allowing the Dutchmen to score in the first half. Lycoming was held scoreless until 4:39 of the opening quarter before Stephen Romano found the back of the net on a pass from Ben Walker, who also assisted the second goal to Matthew Smith. Romano scored his second goal with only one second left in period, finishing a pass from senior Brad Schaeffer.

It took only 49 seconds for Lycoming to score again, this time from Bobby Morris, who received his pass from Walker. Romano scored his final goal of the game with 9:27 remaining in the first half, giving Schaeffer his second helper and Lycoming a 5-0 lead at halftime.

Schaeffer opened the scoring in the second half with 9:15 remaining in the third stanza. Chris Berube was credited with the assist. At the 8:08 mark, Walker tallied the Warriors’ only unassisted goal. Lebanon Valley (2-12, 0-10) reached the scoreboard for the first time at the 7:06 mark in the third, but 10 seconds later, Schaeffer tallied his second goal of the game after freshman Matt Doherty won the ensuing faceoff.

Lycoming finished the game with three unanswered goals from three different scorers. Morris finished his pass from Justin Bartlett and Berube scored after Tom Lurie found him open above the crease. Walker had the final score of the day on a Schaeffer assist.

Schaeffer and Walker each posted five points with two goals and three assists. Schaeffer’s comes as a season-high while Walker posted a career-best. Romano found the goal three times on four shots, all of which were on goal. Senior Josh Danmyer was the winning goalie, making three saves. Ryan Gillen appeared in the cage for the second 30 minutes, making four stops.

“The tenacity of our defense is the only thing that overshadowed the unselfishness of our offense,” said head coach Brian Anken.

As a team, Lycoming assisted 10 of its 11 goals and put 23 of its 36 shots on cage. The Warriors controlled the faceoff spot as well, winning 12 of the 16 draws. On defense, seniorMatt Siracusa had five of Lycoming’s 16 turnovers and picked up five groundballs. Lycoming outgroundballed the Dutchmen 26-20.

The Warriors conclude their regular season on Saturday, May 1 when they host Manhattanville College, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Robert L. Shangraw Complex.
