Anken sets program record for conference wins in 12-3 defeat of Alvernia

READING, Pa. – In just his fourth season at the helm of the program, Lycoming College men’s lacrosse head coach Brian Anken broke the school record for conference wins after the Warriors defeated Alvernia University 12-3 on the road on Saturday, April 17. Anken is now 23-11 in the Middle Atlantic Conference during his time at Lycoming, surpassing Gene Peluso, the program’s first head coach, who finished with a MAC record of 22-12.

It didn’t take long for Lycoming’s offense to get going, tallying five consecutive goals in the first quarter. Senior Brad Schaeffer had a hand in the first two goals, scoring the game-opening tally and finding an open Bobby Morris for his first assist. Sophomore Ben Walker scored the third goal followed by Ryan O'Connor on an unassisted tally. Freshman Tom Lurie rounded out the quarter with his first goal with only 39 seconds left in the period.

Alvernia (3-10, 0-7) scored its first goal at 11:29 of the second quarter before the Lycoming (7-5, 5-2) offense rattled off another five unanswered goals. Walker converted a Schaeffer pass into a goal followed by back-to-back scores from Lurie, whose second goal was assisted by Chris Andrychuk, giving Lycoming an 8-1 advantage to end the first half.

The Warriors found the back of the net twice in the third quarter, getting tallies from junior Matthew Smith and Schaeffer. In the final stanza of the game, the Warriors picked up goals from Stephen Romano and sophomoreEthan Payne, who scored on a man-up opportunity with Nate Walter on the assist.

Lurie scored a game-high three goals and Schaeffer tallied two goals and two assists. Walker had two scores and one helper as O’Connor, Romano, Smith and Morris each scored once. At the faceoff spot, Lycoming dominated winning 13 of the 16 draws. Sophomore Tim Clemente went 10-of-16 while freshman Matt Doherty won all three of his draws. Clemente scooped up a game-high 11 groundballs.

As a team, Lycoming outshot the Crusaders 34-15 and picked up 32 groundballs to Alvernia’s 19. The Warriors had a solid day in the clearing department, gaining the offensive zone on 25 of 28 attempts.

Lycoming is at home for its next game versus DeSales University on Wednesday, April 21. The opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Robert L. Shangraw Complex
