WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College softball team picked up two victories in a non-conference sweep of Juniata College on Thursday, April 15. Freshman pitcher Holly Lansberry was the winning pitcher in both games, taking the first victory 9-0 and the second game 5-3 and pitched in 12 innings.

Lycoming (10-20) quickly dispatched the Eagles, taking the first game 9-0 in just five innings. Lansberry was the game’s winning pitcher and had solid defense behind her, forcing the Juniata batters into six flyouts and six ground outs while retiring three batters. She took a no hitter into the top of the fifth inning before the Eagles had two players reach base.

The Lady Warriors scored early in the game, with five players reaching home in the first two innings, including sophomore Manda Peck twice. Freshman Amy Cline tagged home in the second inning, as did Laura Taylor and Allyson Marianelli, who also scored in the third inning. Lycoming reached the mercy rule in the bottom of the fourth after Jess Nabholz and Lansberry each reached home plate.

“We came in here as a young team, and the puzzle pieces are starting to fit,” said head coach Dan Lazorka. “Now we’re playing with the attitude that we can win every game.”

Game two was a much tighter affair, with neither team gaining more than a one-run advantage until the bottom of the sixth inning when Cline belted a homerun of the leftfield fence, bringing in Peck and giving Lycoming a 5-3 lead. The Warriors knocked out the final three Juniata batters in a one-two-three seventh inning for the win.

“We went with the girls that have been swinging bat hot and it paid off for us in game two,” said Lazorka.

Lansberry pulled double-duty in the series, pitching all seven innings of the second game, striking out two Eagles, and allowed just three runs. Taylor recorded three put outs at catcher, including a sprawling catch on foul tip.

The Lady Warriors host Commonwealth Conference foe Elizabethtown College on Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m. at the Robert L. Shangraw Athletic Complex.
