WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team played unselfishly, assisting nine of its 15 goals as the Warriors took down the Monarchs of King’s College 15-6 on Wednesday, April 14. Senior attacker Nate Walter dished out five helpers in the win.
After a slow start, the Lycoming offense started clicking, scoring four goals in the final six minutes, three of which were assisted.
Ed Williams tallied the first goal on an assist from
Ben Walker. Stephen Romano scored his first goal with 4:21 left in the quarter, getting the assist from
Ethan Payne. Walter tallied his first marker just six seconds later after long stick midfielder
Shawn Lowman picked up the groundball on the ensuing faceoff and found Walter on the crease. Payne scored the final goal of the quarter with 3:01 on the clock.
Lycoming (6-5, 4-2) continued to move the ball well, with
Walter tallying another three assists, finding Williams, Payne and
Romano. The Monarchs (4-6, 2-4) strung together three unanswered between the end of the second quarter and the start of the third.
“We spent the last week focusing on fundamentals, tweaking some aspects of our offense,” said head coach
Brian Anken. “It was nice to see the system work and the unselfishness.”
Romano and Walter shined early in the third quarter, combining to have a hand in each of the next five goals. Romano found the back of the net twice and dished a pass to
Mike Doherty off a faceoff. Walter assisted one of Romano’s goals and scored his second goal of the day.
The Warriors put together a four-goal fourth quarter, including a score from junior
Chris Berube, returning from an injury for his first point of the season. Walter scored twice more in the final stanza, with Payne also finding the goal.
Walter finished with nine points (4g, 5a) while Romano had five points on four goals and one assist. Payne and Williams each tallied two goals and Walker, Doherty and Berube each scored once. Faceoffs were a big stat for Lycoming, with Doherty and
Tim Clemente combing to go 17 of 24 at the draw spot. Doherty won 14 of his 19 attempts while Clemente went three-for-five. Doherty grabbed a game-high 12 groundballs.
“Riding is one of the things we take the most pride in today, and it showed,” said Anken.
The Monarchs gained the offensive zone just 16 times on 25 attempts, while the Warriors cleared 16 times on 18 attempts. Lycoming forced King’s into 23 turnovers, 15 of which were caused. Defensive midfielder
Victor Gonzalez recorded a team-best three turnovers.
