Men's lacrosse falls to FDU-Florham in double overtime

MADISON, N.J. – In a back and forth battle, the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team fell to the 2009 Middle Atlantic Conference champion FDU-Florham in a double overtime thriller 9-8 on Saturday, April 10. The Lycoming shooters were efficient, taking just 19 shots to score their eight goals.

In the second overtime, FDU-Florham (5-4, 4-1) won the faceoff and banged the ball around the outside before finding Kevin Shadiack on the crease for the game winning goal.

With 2:05 remaining in the game, junior Josh Perrault scored the equalizer and knot the game at eight apiece and force extra time. Perrault’s tally also halted a five-goal streak by FDU.

The Lycoming offense found its rhythm late in the second quarter, scoring four goals in the final 2:50 of the first half. Sophomore defenseman Victor Marchetti found the back of the net after clearing in transition, followed by two Ethan Payne goals in less than 30 seconds, one of which was man-up. Senior midfielder Ed Williams scored the final goal of the half with 44 seconds left on the clock to give Lycoming a 6-3 halftime lead. Attackman Nate Walter had the assist on Payne’s first goal.

In the third quarter, Stephen Romano recorded the only point, doing so with 27 left in the period, with senior defenseman Kevin Devenney  earning the assist.

Lycoming (5-5, 3-2) book ended it goals in the fourth quarter, with Williams finding the goal just 24 seconds into the stanza on an extra-man opportunity. FDU rattled off four unanswered goals before Perrault scored his goal.

Payne finished the day with three goals while Williams scored twice and Walter dished out two helpers. Lycoming’s offense took just 19 shots, with six coming in the first quarter and five in the second and fourth. In cage, junior Alan Antinarelli made 14 stops while seeing 40 Devils’ shots.

As a team, Lycoming went 12-of-20 at the faceoff spot, with senior Mike Doherty winning four of his seven draws and sophomore Tim Clemente going eight of 13. Both specialists picked up three groundballs, as did Devenney.

Lycoming is home for its next game when it hosts King’s College in a Middle Atlantic Conference tilt. The opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14 at the Robert L. Shangraw Athletic Complex.
