Men's basketball comeback falls short in first round of NCAA play

HARRISONBURG, Va. – With three ties over a span of two minutes in the back end of the second half, the Lycoming College men’s basketball team fell to Wilmington (Ohio) College 78-74 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday, March 6.

The action was tight throughout the first half, and despite a nine-point Quaker lead, the Warriors battled back, down just 39-37 at halftime after Eric Anthony nailed a three-pointer to end the half. He finished the first stanza with 12 points, going a perfect four-for-four from the field, including hitting two attempts from beyond the arc. Joining Anthony in double-figures was freshman Ihsaan Davis, who posted 13 points, knocking down four of his six attempt, two of which were three-pointers. Davis also had a game-high five rebounds.

Lycoming continued to shoot well in the second half, hitting 52.4 percent of their shots. Anthony gave the Warriors a lead at 8:59 on a transition layup. Lycoming held the advantage through most of the second half, but sharpshooting by the Quakers took over the lead. Davis led Lycoming in the second period, recording 12 points, followed closely by junior forward Will Kelly's 11 points.

Davis finished the game with a career-high 25 points and six rebounds. Kelly tallied 19 points in the contest, while Anthony capped his career with a 16-point effort. Davis shot 70.0 percent (seven-of-10) from the field, including three-of-four from three-point land and eight-for-nine at the free throw line. Anthony missed just one shot the entire game, knocking down five of his six field goals, two of which were three-pointers and was a perfect four-for-four from the charity stripe.

As a team, Lycoming shot 45.1 percent (23-51) from the field, hitting six of its 10 three-pointers. Rebounding was tight the whole game, with the Quakers narrowly outrebounding Lycoming 29-28. Ten of the Warriors rebounds came on offense.

Four of the five starters for Wilmington were in double-digits in scoring, led by Brandon Rogers’ 20 points. Tyler White registered 18 while RJ Brown and Tyler Ledford recorded 12 and 10 points, respectively. Rogers led the Quakers on the boards, grabbing five rebounds.

Lycoming concludes its season with an overall record of 21-7, and went 10-4 in the Commonwealth Conference. Second-year head coach Guy Rancourt, who was tabbed as the conference’s Coach of the Year, turned the Warriors around after finishing the 2008-09 with an 11-13 overall record and 4-8 in the league to reach the NCAA playoffs on an at-large bid this season.
