DALLAS, Pa. – Lycoming College men’s lacrosse sophomore Ethan Payne scored six goals en route to a dominant 17-5 victory over Misericordia University on Wednesday, March 24 in a Middle Atlantic Conference road game. Ten of Lycoming’s 17 goals came on assists.

Misericordia (2-4, 0-1) tallied the first goal of the game, but could not find an answer for the Warriors’ high-powered offense, which tallied nine straight goals. Payne scored four of his six goals in the first half, including three straight for a natural hat trick. Freshman Stephen Romano found the back of the net twice in the first half. Senior attackman Nate Walter and Payne worked well together in the first half, with Walter assisting three of Payne’s goals, helping Lycoming take a 6-1 lead into halftime.

“We were patient offensively and getting the best shots,” said head coach Brian Anken. “It was a total team effort.”

In the second half, Walter switched roles, scoring two of the Warriors’ first three goals of the third quarter, with Romano tallying his third of the day. The Cougars rattled in two straight tallies, but Lycoming (3-3, 1-0) continued to find different goal scorers, with four different Warriors notching scores to end the third. The Warriors started how they finished, tallying another four goals in the final stanza, with Payne scoring twice with Romano and Walter each scoring once.

Walter tallied a career-high nine points on four goals and five assists. Romano tallied a career-high four goals and handed out two assists. Senior faceoff specialist Mike Doherty and sophomore Tim Clemente combined to win 18 faceoffs, with Doherty winning nine of his 10 attempts.

Lycoming dominated in transition, clearing the ball on 12 of its 13 attempts. The riding game held Misericordia to just six successful clears. The Warriors had another successful day in the groundball category, picking up 32 while only allowing the Cougars just 13.

“It was a total team effort,” said Anken. “We looked great systematically on offense and defense. We wanted to ride hard all game, as well as clear it into our offensive end. Just a phenomenal day.”

The Warriors host Eastern University on Saturday, March 27. The first faceoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Robert L. Shangraw Athletic Complex.
