WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Down 8-3 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team rallied to force overtime against St. John Fisher College on Wednesday, March 10. The Cardinals, a team that played in its conference championship game last season, won the game 10-9 in the first minute of extra time.
After playing to a 1-1 tie in the first quarter, the Cardinals (3-0) outscored Lycoming 3-1 in the second period to take a 4-2 lead into halftime. Lycoming’s two goals were scored by
Ed Williams and
Josh Perrault, whose tally came on an extra-man opportunity.
Brad Schaeffer was credited with the assist on the Perrault goal. The faceoff battle was split, with each team winning four of the eight draws.
Lycoming (2-2) scored one goal in the third quarter before exploding on offense, scoring six unanswered goals. The Warriors picked up three goals from Williams in the run, with two of his goals assisted by
Nate Walter and
Tom Lurie. Perrault tallied his second and third goals of the game during the streak, with defender
Kevin Devenney picking up an assist on Perrault’s second goal.
In overtime, the Cardinals picked up the faceoff on a push call against the Warriors and quickly scored in the first minute.
Williams finished the game with four goals, while Perrault tallied three scores.
Ethan Payne chipped in two goals and
Walter had two assists. Sophomore faceoff specialist
Tim Clemente stepped up big in the second half, going eight of 11, including winning five of his seven draws in the fourth quarter. Between the pipes,
Alan Antinarelli made 13 saves, including four big stops in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Each team took 38 shots, with the Warriors taking 15 in the fourth quarter. Lycoming won the groundball battle, picking up 27 to Fisher’s 24.
Fisher was led by Kyle Denhoff, who scored three goals and had one assist. The Cardinals had six different goal scorers and had five assisted goals. Netminder Jon Cortina made nine saves.
Lycoming is on the road for its next game when it travels to NCAA Division III semifinalist Stevenson University. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 13.
